Thousands of Disney World Vacations at Risk as Snow Hurdles Toward Parks

Central Florida is bracing for rare arctic weather that could bring snow to Walt Disney World Resort for the first time in nearly five decades. With temperatures expected to plummet, thousands of Disney Park vacations could face disruptions, raising concerns about potential theme park closures and travel chaos.

Florida is known for mild winter weather, but meteorologists are warning of a major cold front set to arrive in early January. According to Brooks Garner (@BrooksWeather on X/Twitter), temperatures will soar into the 80s this week but could plummet drastically between January 7 and January 13.

“MON. 12/30, ORLANDO — Highs will push 80°F for the next few days across our region, but signals remain strong that we’re in for a major cold blast around the weekend of the Disney Marathon (1/12) with lows in the 20s (or colder) entirely possible, with highs in the 40s and 50s,” Garner reported.

If conditions align, this arctic blast could deliver snowflakes to Walt Disney World Resort, something not seen since January 1977, when a modest .05 inches of snow fell in the Orlando area.

Walt Disney World Weather Closures

As temperatures drop, Walt Disney World Resort operations could take a hit. Historically, the Central Florida water parks, including Disney’s Blizzard Beach and Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon, close during extreme cold. With Typhoon Lagoon already shuttered for refurbishment, Blizzard Beach is the sole water park open—at least for now. A closure could be imminent if temperatures plunge into the freezing range.

Beyond water parks, Walt Disney World Resort’s four main theme parks may also face operational changes, depending on how the weather impacts guest safety and transportation. Visitors are encouraged to monitor the My Disney Experience app for park hours and closures updates.

Weather Challenges Disney World Guests

The unusual weather could pose additional complications for the thousands of travelers flocking to Disney World in January. Due to the cold front, guests may encounter flight cancellations, icy road conditions, and delays. Those planning to attend the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend, scheduled for January 8–12, should prepare for frigid temperatures during the event.

Will It Snow in Central Florida?

While snow remains a possibility, meteorologists are divided on whether it will materialize. FOX13 Chief Meteorologist Paul Dellegatto expressed skepticism, noting, “Remember, when it gets cold around here, the atmosphere typically lacks moisture. Can’t get snow without something falling from the sky.”

However, AccuWeather’s long-range meteorologist Alex DaSilva told the Tallahassee Democrat that snowflakes are not out of the question: “If the blast is intense enough during the second week of January, then it’s possible some people in Florida can see some snow flakes,” she said.

  1. Seriously? “Snow hurdles towards WDW?” A polar cycle is going to bring rare cold temps. News flash: this happens sometimes. Back in 1981/1982, I was at Navy boot camp near Orlando. December/January/February. It was COLD. Some of the recruits got frostbite. No snow. Just cold.
Pro tip: wear a coat and gloves. Skip the flip flops. You’ll be fine.
