This month brings a nostalgic milestone to Walt Disney World Resort. After five years of silence, the Prairie Outpost & Supply is set to reopen its doors on June 30 in Frontierland at Magic Kingdom Park. Once known for its snacks and sweet treats, the beloved shop will return with a new focus—offering themed headwear for guests of all ages.
“Become a fashion pioneer when you shop for wide-brimmed hats, classic fedoras, customized headwear, and more at this stylish shop in Frontierland,” Disney shared in the reopening announcement.

The Prairie Outpost originally closed along with the rest of Walt Disney World back in 2020, when the resort temporarily shut down in response to the global coronavirus pandemic. Its reopening marks the end of a five-year closure that became a symbol of that historic moment for the park and its guests.
But as one door opens, others will soon close to make way for something entirely new. Over in the same Frontierland area, two longtime Magic Kingdom experiences—Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America—will officially close on July 7.
These closures pave the way for a major expansion that includes the construction of Piston Peak National Park, a brand-new land inspired by the world of Pixar’s Cars. While Disney has not yet confirmed specific attractions, early details suggest at least two rides will be geared toward families and older guests.

This project is part of a much broader transformation happening across Walt Disney World. In addition to Magic Kingdom’s major updates, work is already in progress at the former DinoLand U.S.A. in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. And at the heart of the Magic Kingdom changes lies the reimagining of Frontierland, including the anticipated Beyond Big Thunder expansion, which will eventually incorporate Disney Villains into the park’s ever-growing storytelling universe.
As part of this transformation, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is temporarily closed and will remain so into next year. While these updates have inspired some fans to postpone their visits, others are eager to experience the new era of Disney magic as it unfolds.
For now, June 30 offers a chance to step back into a little piece of the past—reimagined for the present—at the Prairie Outpost in Frontierland.
