Farewell to a Classic: Another Legendary Disney Attraction Closing Soon

When you step into the Disneyland Resort, you’re greeted with endless possibilities. From thrilling attractions to nostalgic classics, it’s a place where memories are made, and dreams come to life. Among these iconic experiences, one stands out for its futuristic charm and historical significance: the Disneyland Monorail.

However, guests planning to visit early next year will need to adjust their itineraries because this beloved attraction will be closed indefinitely for refurbishment.

The Disneyland Monorail, a favorite of Walt Disney himself, isn’t just a ride — it’s a journey through history. Opening in 1959, it was the first daily operating monorail system in the Western Hemisphere.

Guests board the sleek, modern trains in Downtown Disney and glide directly into Tomorrowland, offering a unique perspective of Disneyland Park and parts of Disney California Adventure along the way. While it doesn’t stop in DCA, the ride’s sweeping views of Grizzly Peak and Hollywood Land make it a must-do for many visitors.

Unfortunately, this historic attraction will close on January 6, 2025, for refurbishment, with no set reopening date. According to the Disneyland Resort’s calendar, the monorail will remain closed through at least the end of January. Given the lack of additional information, it’s likely that the closure will extend beyond this timeframe.

This isn’t the first time the monorail has gone under the knife. The attraction was briefly closed in August for maintenance, and given its age, these touch-ups are essential to keeping it running smoothly. As one of Disneyland’s oldest operational attractions, the monorail requires extra care to preserve its legacy for future generations.

While the monorail’s closure might feel like a loss, it’s not the only Disneyland attraction temporarily closing in early 2025.

Several seasonal favorites, including Haunted Mansion Holiday and “it’s a small world” Holiday, will also be undergoing transformations. Haunted Mansion Holiday will close on January 7 to revert to its traditional state, reopening on January 17, while “it’s a small world” Holiday will also close on January 12, with no reopening date confirmed.

Over in Disney California Adventure, Grizzly River Run and Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind will close on January 6 and January 7, respectively. While Emotional Whirlwind is scheduled to reopen on January 23, Grizzly River Run’s closure will last until March 13.

Perhaps most concerning for longtime fans, the Red Car Trolley, a cherished icon of Disney California Adventure, will close—possibly permanently—on February 9 to make way for Avengers Campus expansion. Whether it will ever return remains uncertain.

For now, Disneyland guests can look forward to new adventures and reimagined experiences as the park continues its tradition of balancing nostalgia with innovation. While the temporary loss of the Disneyland Monorail is bittersweet, it ensures that this iconic attraction will remain part of the magic for years to come.
