Disney’s Tiana’s Store Gets Another Shot—But Will It Last This Time?

Disneyland’s Ray’s Berets shop in Bayou Country has recently received a fresh update, with a brand-new grass roof now adorning the building. This comes after a previous attempt to install sod that was less than successful, failing to survive under the California sun. The new sod, installed in late June 2025, marks a second attempt to restore the shop’s iconic, natural aesthetic, which is inspired by Ray the firefly from The Princess and the Frog.

The Challenges Behind the Grass Roof

The initial installation of the grass roof at Ray’s Berets was met with significant challenges. Despite the best efforts, the previous sod struggled to thrive in the warm weather conditions, with guests reporting the grass began to deteriorate within just a week. This rapid decline led Disneyland to make the decision to replace it. However, the fresh sod that has been added looks promising, with photos shared by visitors showing the shop’s roof once again covered in vibrant green grass.

Aesthetic Importance of the Roof

The grass roof is a central design element for Ray’s Berets, enhancing the immersive atmosphere of Bayou Country. The lush, natural appearance of the roof plays a crucial role in maintaining the area’s bayou-inspired theme. For guests, the presence of greenery atop the shop helps elevate the overall experience, allowing them to feel as if they’ve been transported into the magical world of The Princess and the Frog. With that in mind, ensuring that the grass remains healthy and vibrant is key to preserving the shop’s aesthetic appeal.

Ongoing Efforts to Maintain the Roof

Maintaining a living grass roof in a theme park setting is no easy feat. Various factors, including weather, sunlight, and irrigation, all play a role in determining how well the sod will fare. The challenges faced during the previous attempt highlighted how difficult it is to maintain such a feature, but Disneyland’s commitment to keeping the roof intact shows its dedication to creating a lasting and authentic experience for guests.

Fresh sod has been added to the roof of Ray’s Berets at Disneyland! Considering it only lasted about a week last time I hope this batch does better!

As Disneyland continues to enhance the Bayou Country area, the longevity of Ray’s Berets’ grass roof will be monitored closely. The new sod’s success will likely influence the park’s future landscaping choices. Visitors to Disneyland will surely appreciate the fresh look of the shop and the added vibrancy it brings to the surrounding area. Whether the sod can maintain its lush appearance for the long haul remains to be seen, but for now, the green roof adds another charming detail to the ever-evolving Bayou Country.
