EPCOT Guest Caught on Video Doing This Illegal Activity and We Have Questions

A viral video has surfaced of a guest fishing in the World Showcase waterways at EPCOT, despite Disney's strict prohibition against such activities. The TikTok clip, later shared on X by @NickChaps96, shows the guest using a handheld fishing reel near the bridge between the Odyssey Pavilion and Test Track, hooking and releasing a fish. This behavior is prohibited to ensure safety and protect local wildlife, including fish, turtles, and ducks.

How Did They Get Fishing Gear Past EPCOT Security?

The bigger question is how the guests got past security with fishing gear, given that Walt Disney World operates bag-check procedures at park entrances where security cast members inspect bags, backpacks, and other items guests bring into the parks to ensure compliance with prohibited items policies. Fishing rods, reels, and tackle represent equipment that should reasonably attract security attention during bag check procedures, though collapsible or compact fishing gear could potentially be concealed or disguised as other items.

It remains unclear whether the guest brought fishing equipment through security checkpoints or acquired it after entering the park through unauthorized means, though the latter scenario seems highly unlikely given that there are no fishing equipment vendors inside EPCOT and bringing gear from outside would still require passing through security.

You Can Actually Fish at Disney World, but Not Like This

Interestingly enough, fishing actually is available at Walt Disney World if guests do it the right way through official Disney recreational offerings rather than unauthorized fishing in theme park waterways. Disney offers guided largemouth bass fishing excursions at several resort marinas across the property, providing structured fishing experiences led by experienced guides who know the best fishing spots and techniques. Guests can also enjoy dockside fishing at select locations, such as Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground and Disney's Port Orleans Resort Riverside, where fishing from docks or shorelines is permitted within designated areas.

There are even early-morning fishing excursions on lakes near EPCOT and Disney's Hollywood Studios before the parks open, allowing anglers to fish in the same bodies of water visible from the theme parks, but through official Disney programs rather than just showing up with a fishing rod inside the park.

Where You Can Actually Fish Instead of EPCOT

The full list of participating Resorts includes Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground, Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort, Disney's Contemporary Resort, Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, Disney's Old Key West Resort, Disney's Polynesian Village Resort, Disney's Port Orleans Resort Riverside, Disney's Wilderness Lodge, and Disney's Yacht Club Resort, providing numerous options for guests wanting to fish during their Walt Disney World vacations without breaking park rules.

Disney Parks Blog highlighted the Enchanting Extras Collection which includes catching a fish and heading out on a boat ride, stating that whether guests are families of first-timers seeking adventure, groups of friends looking for relaxing respite, or avid anglers on solo trips, the water is open to everyone through official Disney fishing programs.

Why This Is Actually Dangerous

Disney maintains strict rules about guest behavior around park waterways for multiple reasons, starting with safety concerns: bodies of water at Walt Disney World can contain hazards, including varying depths, underwater structures, aquatic vegetation, and potentially dangerous wildlife. While Disney's lakes and lagoons may appear calm and inviting, they are not designated swimming or wading areas, and unauthorized entry creates drowning risks and injury potential.

The protection of wildlife represents another critical reason for prohibiting unauthorized fishing, as EPCOT's World Showcase Lagoon and other Disney waterways support ecosystems including fish populations, turtles, waterfowl, and other species. Unauthorized fishing disrupts these ecosystems by removing fish from populations and disturbing habitats through unauthorized human presence.

The viral nature of the video demonstrates how social media amplifies incidents that might previously have gone unnoticed, creating public relations challenges for Disney as videos spread across platforms, reaching millions of viewers.
