Disney Hand Sanitizer Recall

It looks like Disney might be in trouble as the resurgence of COVID-19 in China sparks the FDA to take another look at the protective measures.

With the outbreak of COVID-19 out of Wuhan, China, came the opportunity for a wide variety of sanitation products. Companies like The Walt Disney Company jumped at the opportunity to create their own branded versions of generic products, from character-themed face masks to hand sanitizer. How many Disney fans who visited Disney World in 2020 picked up some sort of Disneyfied products?

However, The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is now advising people not to use over 360 different hand sanitizers,  citing exposure to harmful chemicals that are causing methanol poisoning and other adverse effects such as blurred vision or permanent blindness and false advertising.

A new report states that reasons for the FDA’s recall include the discovery of hand sanitizers that fit the following, “Containing methanol, 1-propanol, benzene, acetaldehyde, or acetal; is labeled to contain methanol; it’s been found to have microbial contamination; it’s being recalled by the manufacturer or distributor.”

The FDA shared,

We discovered serious safety concerns with some hand sanitizers during recent testing, including:

  • Contamination with potentially toxic types of alcohol
  • Not enough active ingredient (ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol)
  • Labels with false, misleading, or unproven claims

Some hand sanitizers have been recalled and there are more than 150 hand sanitizers the FDA recommends you stop using right away.

The FDA also warns of false advertising, saying.

“During the coronavirus pandemic the FDA has found some false or misleading claims on hand sanitizer labels. Before you buy hand sanitizer you should know that no hand sanitizer has been proven to:

  • Prevent the spread of COVID-19
  • Protect you from viruses or bacteria for a certain period of time, such as 24-hours

No consumer hand sanitizer is FDA-approved, so that claim on any consumer hand sanitizer is not trustworthy.”

Many of these products are coming out of China and include several Disney products.
