The charm of a secluded cabin in the woods comes with a catch at Walt Disney World Resort, and one family's firsthand experience is prompting some serious second thoughts about booking one.
What The Cabins at Fort Wilderness Actually Cost You

Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campgrounds occupies a unique space in the Walt Disney World lodging lineup. Technically classified as a Moderate Resort, it offers over 800 campsites for guests arriving with tents or RVs, along with roughly 400 cabins that deliver a rustic outdoor feel without requiring guests to pitch their own shelter. Nightly rates for the cabins range from $450 to $700, depending on room type and seasonal demand — more affordable than many Deluxe Disney Resort options, but far from cheap.
This month, Disney Food Blog documented their stay in The Cabins at Fort Wilderness and came away with a clear message for anyone considering booking: think carefully before you commit.
The Transportation Problem
The core issue isn't the cabins themselves; it's the logistics of getting anywhere from them. Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort covers an enormous amount of ground, and guests who want to spend time at the theme parks face a multi-step transportation process before they even leave the property. An internal bus system connects the sprawling complex, but guests must ride it to reach either the watercraft dock for Magic Kingdom Park or the main bus depot for EPCOT, Disney's Hollywood Studios, and Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park.

Disney Food Blog found the internal bus running roughly every 20 minutes. Miss one by a few seconds, and guests face a choice: wait for the next one or hike to the depot themselves, a decision that gets more complicated the farther your cabin sits from the main hub. During high-traffic periods like rope drop and park closing, the double-transportation requirement adds even more time to every trip.
The same friction applies to days spent at the Disney Resort hotel. Visiting the pool, grabbing a meal, or picking up merchandise all require hopping the internal bus, sometimes while hauling towels, wet swimsuits, and refillable mugs. Forgot your wallet at the cabin? That's a round-trip bus ride to retrieve it, potentially close to an hour lost when 20-minute waits are factored in each way.
The Golf Cart Workaround

Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort does offer a solution to the internal transportation headache: golf carts. Guests can rent one directly from the resort or bring their own. The rental rate runs from $75 to $100 per day, and guests who bring their own vehicles must provide proof of insurance. It helps, sure, but it's one more line item on an already substantial vacation budget.
The Cabins at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort aren't without appeal. The setting is truly tranquil and unlike anything else on Walt Disney World Resort property. But for guests whose primary goal is to maximize time at the four theme parks, the remoteness that makes Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort special is also what makes it inconvenient.
