According to the Hollywood Reporter, the award-winning and well-established crime comedy director Guy Ritchie is set to direct Disney’s latest live-action remake of one of its classic animated Disney films. This time, the movie getting a live-action makeover is the 1997 animated movieĀ Hercules!
Guy Ritchie is best known for his British crime comedy films, which usually feature British characters (who often speak in a cockney manner) and a gritty, violent style. Some of his biggest hits have been the 2015 movie The Man From U.N.C.L.E., the 2019 movieĀ The Gentlemen, and the twoĀ Sherlock HolmesĀ movies that starredĀ AvengersĀ actor Robert Downey Jr.
Guy Ritchie did already lend his directorial expertise to one Disney remake (the 2019 version of Aladdin that starred Will Smith as the Genie), and the modern adaptation did extremely well. Clearly, Disney liked Guy Ritchie’s work and wanted to bring him back for more!
With Guy Ritchie at the helm, the new version ofĀ HerculesĀ might be very different. Fans of the director will be curious to see how he chooses to portray the Greek gods from Olympus and the villain Hades (particularly since Hades, who was originally voiced by James Woods, is a character who seems right up Guy Ritchie’s alley)!
The Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings writer Dave Callaham is also onboard, and Disney is looking for more writers to join him. Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War producers Joe and Anthony Russo are also going to be behind the scenes for this movie!
According to Hollywood Reporter, so far it “is unclear whether the new take on Hercules will keep the originalās musical elements”. Fans of the original (and Broadway star Susan Egan, who voiced Megara) will definitely be hoping that the movie’s iconic soundtrack makes a comeback along with the plot!
