On May 26, Disney will release its newest live-action remake based on one of its most successful animated films ever, The Little Mermaid. The new movie will star Halle Bailey as the titular mermaid, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Awkwafina as Scuttle, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, and Daveed Diggs as Sebastian. It is also rumored that Lin-Manuel Miranda will make a cameo as Chef Louis. The film, while being close to the original, will also bring a new, fresh twist to the classic tale.

For months, the film has been mired in controversy, not because fans are frustrated with another live-action remake, but because of a major casting decision. While the original little mermaid — voiced by Jodi Benson — had pale skin and red hair, Disney cast Halle Bailey for its live-action remake. Bailey is a young — and very talented — black actress and singer. The film will still feature the little mermaid’s signature red hair, but it will be braided to fit Bailey’s new take on the character.

With just under three months to go until the new movie comes out, Disney is starting to make some new merchandise to promote it. One of those pieces of merchandise is a new doll that looks just like Bailey. Bailey shared a first look at the doll on Twitter, coming to tears with how much it meant to her.

omg 🥺💗the little girl in me is pinching herself right now ..i have my own Little Mermaid Ariel doll !!! I can’t believe how much she captures my version of this iconic character 🥺💕brb gonna go cry now …

Just after Valentine’s Day, Disney released the official first trailer for The Little Mermaid, and you can watch it below.

The live-action film will add new elements to the story, including new songs from original composer Alan Menken, who has teamed up with Hamilton creator, Lin Manuel Miranda. Fans will also be introduced to a brand-new character, Prince Eric’s mother. Prince Eric’s parents were not addressed in the animated film, so this new character will bring depth to his character.

The Little Mermaid will be released in theaters on May 26, 2023.
