Holiday Rush Ends, but the Line for One Magic Kingdom Ride Is Just Beginning

As the holiday decorations come down and crowds thin out at Disney World, one ride in Magic Kingdom is set to buck the trend and keep its lines long. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, the iconic roller coaster beloved by generations of park-goers, will close on January 6, 2025, for an extensive refurbishment. This downtime will last at least a year, with Disney eyeing a reopening date sometime in 2026.

Big Thunder Mountain isn’t the only closure shaking up Disney World in 2025. Over at Animal Kingdom, It’s Tough to Be a Bug will close to make way for a new Zootopia-themed attraction, while Dinosaur is being replaced by a land inspired by Indiana Jones and Encanto. These updates signal major transformations for the park, but they also mean beloved attractions will be unavailable for extended periods.

In EPCOT, Spaceship Earth is set to undergo a long-overdue overhaul that promises to bring updated technology and storytelling to the iconic geodesic sphere. Fans of  will also see changes, as the ride is scheduled for enhancements later in the year.

Meanwhile, at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, MuppetVision 3D will close for Monsters, Inc. Land, though it’s expected to reopen by late summer. These closures are all part of Disney’s commitment to keeping the parks fresh and exciting, but they’ll require visitors to adjust their plans accordingly.
