A shocking report recently has suggested that one of the most prolific men in Hollywood is shaking up the streaming wars by heading back to Disney. If true, this move would be quite a scandalous affair after Netflix just had a breakaway sensation last year created by this prominent person.
Ryan Murphy, the mind behind hits like Glee, American Horror Story, and Dahmer, is reportedly in talks to leave his position at Netflix to work for the mouse. While the successful producer has yet to address the situation, it would not be a stretch to imagine him wanting to return to his roots. Let’s break down what the rumors suggest and how Ryan Murphy at Disney could affect streaming services.
The Ryan Murphy and Disney Relationship
According to Bloomberg reporting, Ryan Murphy has been negotiating a deal with The Walt Disney Company for a while now. It isn’t clear where his position within the company will fall, but the deal will see him reunited with Dana Walden, who was named co-chairman of Disney Entertainment earlier this year. Negotiations over making the jump began before the ongoing writers’ strike started causing delays in Hollywood.

The producer spent the past five years with Netflix after leaving Fox in 2018, just before Disney acquired them. Back then, the streaming giant offered him and several other prominent producers enticing contracts and significant pay to produce content for Netflix. The partnership placed Murphy under contract for five years, meaning his deal is nearing its end.
It is important to note that Murphy is not leaving Netflix prematurely. The creator hasn’t commented or confirmed this information as of yet because he is still finishing up his time with the streaming service. During his time with the company, Ryan Murphy produced several series that failed to become popular. It wasn’t until last year’s Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story did he start finding success. The show was nominated for various accolades and is one of the most-watched series on the platform. He also put out another hit with The Watcher in the same year.

Best of Both Streaming Worlds
Ryan Murphy will still work with Netflix on these successful series he created for the company even after his contract ends. While gaining his talent at Disney is a big win for the entertainment giant, many of his best works already exist on their streaming platforms. All seasons of Glee are on Disney+, and American Horror Story exists on Hulu, among others.
Disney could very much use more original content to keep users subscribing to its streaming services. With many successes during his career, Murphy will be an asset to their bottom line once he moves to the mouse.
