Broadway star Idina Menzel is considered to be musical theater royalty and Disney royalty all on her own — especially since she has just confirmed that she is definitely returning to play Arendelle royal Elsa in Frozen 3 — but the singer and Disenchanted actress also considers another member of Disney’s ‘family’ to be a VIP!
In a rapid-fire “Speed Dating” interview with Billboard recently, Idina Menzel revealed (when asked about her “celebrity crush”) that it was initially Andy Garcia.
From Newsies to Mighty Ducks
The Disney Legend went on to say, however, that she also had a crush on the man who would later become her husband in real life: an actor from not one, but four cult-favorite Disney films!
Actor Aaron Lohr played Mush in the hit musical Newsies (1992) opposite Christian Bale, as well as Dean Portman in the feel-good sports movies D2: The Mighty Ducks (1994) and D3: The Mighty Ducks (1996).
If Only They Knew…
Aaron Lohr also provided the singing voice for Max in A Goofy Movie (1995), and he had a role in the 2005 musical Rent alongside his future wife Menzel (although she was married to her other Rent co-star, Taye Diggs, before him)!
“I mean, he was 16 at the time,” Menzel confessed in the Billboard interview, referring to Lohr’s Disney roles, “but he was hot.”
Newsies, A Goofy Movie, and the Mighty Ducks films are considered to be Disney classics in the minds of many Disney Fanatics, so Aaron Lohr’s appeal won’t be a mystery to many fans of those Disney movies!
A ‘Cult-Favorite’ Connoisseur
Main characters often steal the limelight in movies — since they are, after all, main characters — but many Disney movie enthusiasts tend to develop soft spots for sidekicks or underdogs.
A character like Mush in Newsies was not necessarily the main character (who was named Jack Kelly and portrayed by A-list actor Christian Bale), but he developed a small following of his own just like many other “newsies” from the movie did!
Do you recognize the actor Aaron Lohr in the movie clips shown above? Did you have a crush on him after seeing his movies, just like his future wife Idina Menzel did?
