At the time of this article’s publication, few details are still known about Disney’s upcoming redo of a movie inspired by its Theme Park icon, The Haunted Mansion.
We do know that Jamie Lee Curtis is in it, though. Known for roles in both scary movies, like the Halloween franchise, and Disney movies, like Freaky Friday, she spoke to Entertainment Weekly on the project, saying, in part, “It’s scary like a Disney ride, and funny. If you go on that ride, there’s a lot of humor as well as the scary, ghost-y stuff.”
“I think they found the sweet spot of scary, funny, and adventure,” she also said. “You know, it’s cooking. I barely cook, I attempt cooking all the time, and it’s all ingredients, and then the mix and the time, and it’s always hard to know, are you going to make something yummy? And from what I’m seeing, and what I’ve heard, Justin has made something yummy.”
Making a quick yet memorable appearance at the 2022 D23 Expo to promote the film, Curtis will be playing the role of Madame Leota. She joins a cast that includes Rosario Dawson, LaKeith Stanfield, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Jared Leto, and Tiffany Haddish. Directed by Justin Simien, we know that the film will follow a woman (Dawson) attempting to rid her recently bought New Orleans home of all its happy haunts. There was a previous attempt to do the attraction cinematic justice in 2003 with Eddie Murphy. That is about all we know.
Curtis emphasized that Disney is keeping a tight lip on the details of their latest ride-inspired movie, joking that they were going to “pummel” her for giving anything away. But she did admit one thing:
“I have never in my life worn costumes as beautiful as [the ones] made for me by Jeffrey Kurland [Haunted Mansion costume designer] in this movie — in my life. That’s my big secret!”
Disney’s Haunted Mansion is scheduled to be released in August 2023.
