John Williams to Compose ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Theme

John Williams

It appears that the man who wrote the music for all nine movies of the Skywalker Saga will return to the Star Wars Universe for one more project.

Just a few days after Disney’s CEO Bob Chapek confirmed its Disney+ release date, we now know that the theme for the highly-anticipated series Obi-Wan Kenobi will be provided by none other than the legendary composer John Williams.

This news comes from Variety, who reports:

Williams has written the musical signature for the continuing adventures of the character played by Ewan McGregor, airing on Disney Plus beginning May 25. He recorded last week with a Los Angeles orchestra under tight security, sources say.

It should be noted that neither Disney nor Lucasfilm has released a confirmation or denial of the news at this time. There is also no word yet who will be scoring the six episodes as the news appears only to be directed at the show’s theme itself.

While Williams has already scored other projects beyond George Lucas’ nine core Episodes, including Solo: A Star Wars Story and the soundtrack for Guests’ adventures through Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in the Disney theme parks.

The award-winning composer turned 90 this year and still has a full plate of work in front of him, which includes Lucasfilm’s fifth Indiana Jones film starring Harrison Ford. He also has a series of concerts coming which, according to Variety, consists of the “Vienna Philharmonic on March 12-13, the Philadelphia Orchestra April 19 and 21, the Pittsburgh Symphony on April 25 and the Los Angeles Philharmonic September 2-4 at the Hollywood Bowl.”

But what makes the news about Obi-Wan Kenobi interesting is that Williams has almost never lent his composing for television. His arguably most recognized television themes include those for NBC’s News and Olympics coverage.

Williams has been scoring Obi-Wan Kenobi’s adventures since 1977, when the Jedi Master first appeared on screen played by Alec Guinness in A New Hope. It is only fitting, at least to this reporter, that he provides at least the theme for Kenobi’s title show.
