Disney’s saga with Johnny Depp has raged on since his troubles with ex-wife Amber Heard began. Ever since the actress came out accusing her former husband of domestic violence, his reputation took a hit, and Depp lost many of his prized contracts, including his one with Disney for the famous Pirates of the Caribbean series where the actor played the charming and swash-buckling pirate, Captain Jack Sparrow.

However, ever since Depp won his libel case against Amber Heard, he has been working on slowly but surely rebuilding his career in a way that appears to be appropriate given his tumultuous past few years.

While Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer has publically said he’d be happy to have Johnny Depp back as Captain Jack Sparrow—and frankly, who could replace him?—Depp’s latest move has completely shown up Disney for replacing him at all, almost showing the Mouse House that even if the industry temporarily blocked him, he’s going nowhere.

Johnny Depp will be directing his second film, as reported by The Guardian, which is the biopic of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani. The film, entitled Modi, per most recent news, will also star the massively renowned Al Pacino. The feature has been adapted from the play by Dennis McIntyre; in the movie, Pacino will play real-life art collector Maurice Gangnat (whose portrait was painted in 1916 by Pierre-Auguste Renoir). It also stars Italian actor Riccardo Scamarcio and Pierre Niney.

Per The Guardian,

Modi “follows a chaotic series of events through the streets and bars of war-torn Paris in 1916”, during which Modigliani is “on the run from the police [and his] desire to end his career and leave the city is dismissed by fellow Bohemians: French artist Maurice Utrillo, the Belarusian-born Chaïm Soutine and English muse Beatrice Hastings. Modi seeks advice from his Polish art dealer and friend Léopold Zborowski, but the chaos reaches a crescendo when he’s faced with a collector who could change his life.”

In addition to this, actor Depp will shortly be seen as King Louis XV in the French period drama Jeanne du Barry. The French movie is directed by and stars MaĂŻwenn and will have its world premiere at the Cannes film festival on May 16. It has even been given the prestigious opening slot.

It seems things are finally looking up for our favorite pirate, who is also known for other iconic roles of the artificial man, Edward Scissorhands from Tim Burton’s 1990 film of the same name, Edward Scissorhands.
