It’s been many months since Johnny Depp won his defamation case against his ex-wife Amber Heard. The case, which overtook headlines for months, was heavily documented and live-streamed and helped restore some of Depp’s career, which had tanked massively after the accusations first took root when Amber Heard came out and accused Depp of domestic violence. Depp’s name has since cleared, but the franchises that he once held dear and practically crafted for himself are no longer his.
Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow
One of Depp’s biggest roles by far was his erstwhile stint as the impulsive, flamboyant, and incredibly charismatic Captain Jack Sparrow. One of the most iconic characters of cinema, Jack Sparrow is a complex man and is one of the most well-known morally grey protagonists on the big screen (even before it became a trend). The pirate is often motivated by his self-interest but also has a strong sense of loyalty to his friends and crew. Captain Jack Sparrow was hugely beloved and was the main protagonist of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean series.
But then Johnny Depp lost the role.
The defamation case that Johnny Depp filed against his ex-wife concluded on Friday, May 27, 2023. While it’s been almost a year since then, it doesn’t appear as though Disney is giving Depp back his role on Pirates of the Caribbean anytime soon, even though many have come out and spoken about wanting Johnny Depp back.
Rather movies, franchises, and advertisement partnerships have gone on without him.
Rumors Float of Actors Replacing Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow
The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is iconic. Featuring Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, and many other big names in lead roles, it’s one that has proven to be one of the most popular movie series of all time. However, when tragedy overtook Depp’s life, our beloved Captain Jack Sparrow was set to be replaced, and rumors placed many different actors in the role, including Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and even Margot Robbie when producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed they were developing a script without the beloved Captain Jack Sparrow which featured the Australian actress.
One outlet Giant Freakin’ Robot even confirmed the news at one point. However, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has explicitly stated he’s open to having Depp return to the role, and Disney has remained mum on the subject. The actors themselves have also stayed silent: Dwayne Johnson has neither confirmed nor denied the rumor.
Johnny Depp and Timothée Chalamet
In the latest news, a younger, popular actor will be replacing Depp yet again in a new take on an old classic film—Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory—based on the book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” by author Roald Dahl which was published in 1964.
American actor Timothée Chalamet will be playing a young Willy Wonka in the upcoming movie-musical Wonka. Chalamet is the third actor to play the enigmatic chocolate factory owner; Gene Wilder portrayed the candy man in the 1971 film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s novel, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and Johnny Depp embodied the role in the 2005 reboot Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which Tim Burton directed.
Chalamet has previously portrayed characters adjacent to Johnny Depp. During Super Bowl LV, Chalamet went viral for his performance in an ad as Edward Scissorhands’s (another Johnny Depp character’s) son Edgar Scissorhands. Perhaps in continuing with the trend of casting Chalamet as a younger version of characters affiliated with Johnny Depp, or perhaps because Timothée Chalamet is a popular and well-established actor in his own right, Warner Bros. Studios has cast him as a younger Wonka in the upcoming movie, a role that was likely unsuitable anyway for the much older Depp.
