The South Florida Water Management District just approved Walt Disney World Resort‘s permit to expand Magic Kingdom Park's ferry infrastructure, clearing the way for construction to increase queue capacity and update boarding facilities.
Disney filed the permit in early 2025, requesting updates to ferryboat infrastructure, creation of a floodplain compensation area, and expanded waiting areas and boarding facilities at Magic Kingdom Park. The project gives guests more room to queue for ferries crossing the Seven Seas Lagoon.
Ferry System Evolution

Walt Disney World Resort added a second ferry dock at Magic Kingdom and the Transportation & Ticket Center in 2014, doubling transportation capacity across Seven Seas Lagoon. In 2021, Disney expanded those docks with second-level unloading capability, allowing upper-deck passengers to exit there instead of descending stairs to the first level—speeding up the unloading process.
The floodplain compensation area requirement requires Disney to offset any environmental impact from the dock expansion by creating equivalent wetland or water management space elsewhere on the property, which is standard practice for construction projects affecting water bodies in Florida.
The newly approved expansion continues to improve ferry efficiency through increased queue space and infrastructure upgrades.
No Timeline Announced

Walt Disney World Resort hasn't announced when construction on the ferry expansion will begin. The Central Florida theme park currently operates three ferryboats: Admiral Joe Fowler, Richard F. Irvine, and General Joe Potter.
With permit approval secured, Disney can begin construction whenever it chooses, though no public timeline suggests when guests will encounter barriers or reduced ferry capacity during the expansion work. Whether Disney will close one of the two Magic Kingdom docks during construction—reducing guest capacity—remains unclear.
