Marvel Studios has reportedly scrapped plans for a theatrical Young Avengers project, opting instead to develop a Disney+ series under the title “Champions.”

In recent years, Marvel has struggled to match the box office dominance of Avengers: Endgame (2019). While projects like Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) have generated buzz (and huge profits), others have failed to captivate audiences, leading to declining revenue and mixed critical reception.

The studio’s recent slump has often been attributed to its increased output, particularly with the addition of Disney+ shows. This expanded content pipeline has made it harder for fans to keep up with the MCU’s intricate storyline. Disney CEO Bob Iger has since announced a focus on “quality over quantity,” resulting in several projects being either canceled or significantly reworked, including Daredevil: Born Again and Captain America: Brave New World (2025).

As part of this reshuffling, the highly anticipated Young Avengers movie appears to have been shelved. The film was expected to unite rising Marvel stars like Iman Vellani (Ms. Marvel), Hailee Steinfeld (Kate Bishop), and Kathryn Newton (Cassie Lang) in a big-screen adventure. Instead, Marvel seems to be steering toward a limited Disney+ series.

YouTuber Kristian Harloff recently revealed details about the potential show, saying, “I am hearing that this is a show. It’s a full-on show that they’re going to do. What I’m hearing again is that this is going to be a show, and we’re going to get the people that [are] the two main stars that you know – with Hailee Steinfeld and Iman Vellani – we’re going to get them. I don’t know how many episodes. I would assume limited. That’s what I heard as far as those things go.”

The decision comes in the wake of The Marvels (2023), one of Marvel’s most significant financial disappointments, losing the studio $200 million. While The Marvels showcased a fun, lighthearted tone, its box office struggles have raised questions about the marketability of female-led superhero films. With Young Avengers featuring a predominantly female lineup, the project may have been deemed too risky for a theatrical release.

Although the shift to Disney+ could allow for a more focused exploration of its characters, some fans remain eager for a big-screen team-up for Kamala Khan and her fellow young heroes. Whether Young Avengers or Champions, the hope is that Marvel finds a way to do justice to these promising characters.

Do you think a Disney+ series is the right move, or should Marvel push forward with a theatrical Young Avengers film?
