Not a moment after the reimagined version of The Little Mermaid hit worldwide theaters, Disney Parks around the globe introduced the modern Ariel to the Parks.
With over two-hour queues to see Halle Bailey’s likeness in Ariel at Walt Disney World, Disneyland, and Disneyland Paris, the initial reception was promising for the newest princess on the block. Despite some lukewarm responses to the land-loving iteration of the famous mermaid, plenty of enthusiastic Disney fans are flocking to the Parks to meet her.
The world has witnessed Halle Bailey’s poise throughout the classic remake’s promotion over the last year, including a magical moment that unfolded with a tiny fan at Walt Disney World. A little girl wouldn’t let go of Bailey while she spun her around and tearfully said to her, “You’re so pretty!”
Although Bailey may not be the red-headed Princess Ariel prototype fans of the original animated film may have hoped for, she’s become a multigenerational symbol, empowering girls and women of color. Stepping into a space where she’s had to absorb hundreds of years of racist beliefs, Halle has risen as a Little Mermaid role model with a big impact.
A Princess That Looked Like Her
In a viral post on Instagram by @disgirlmagic, another hallmark Halle moment was added to the Disney books. In a shining review, Andrea, a self-proclaimed “Millennial Mama,” detailed her daughter’s meet-and-greet with the new Ariel.
In a post sharing the moment her little girl met Ariel, her caption said:
Disney….. you did it!!! OMG I don’t have the words @hallebailey look at your impact!
Donning a mermaid-scale gown with puff sleeves and an Ariel-themed set of Mickey ears fitted with a seashell, Andrea’s daughter beamed as she saw the modern Ariel approach her in Hollywood Studios. With a scenic ocean view behind them and a stunning princess with long locs to match Bailey’s in The Little Mermaid, the family captured Disney magic that none of them will soon forget.
In a follow-up post, @disgirlmagic shared poignant points about Bailey’s impact as Ariel:
Meeting Ariel yesterday was ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!!!!!
My baby’s face INSTANTLY lit up! I just wish I could read her mind. Disney put soooo much detail into the meet and greet area. It is TOP TIER!! I was so nervous about my girl’s look and Disney DELIVERED! I still haven’t found the words to adequately describe what this means to me. I grew up going to Disney year after year and there was NEVER a princesses that “looked like me.” For children, that means a lot. And it’s so simple. So why not?
And no… OG Ariel isn’t going away. She’s an OG. This is inclusion not erasure. It’ll be okay. This is okay.
Halle Bailey and the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid can get all the undeserved backlash in the world, but nothing can take away the lasting effect her role will have—not only on young girls but the women raising them.
Disney fans can see one of their favorite Disney princesses in a whole new light in The Little Mermaid, with Halle Bailey as Ariel, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, Awkwafina as Scuttle, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, and Javier Bardem as King Triton, and Jessica Alexander as Vanessa.
