A prominent actor from many beloved films has tragically passed away. Alan Arkin, a talented man known for his charming delivery and immense charisma, has sadly been confirmed dead by his sons. The Oscar-winning actor was 89.
Alan Arkin’s Eight-Decade Acting Career
Alan Arkin died at his home in Carlsbad, California. He had been experiencing ongoing heart conditions in his later years. According to Variety, the actor’s sons expressed a joint statement on his passing:
Our father was a uniquely talented force of nature, both as an artist and a man. A loving husband, father, and great-grandfather, he was adored and will be deeply missed.

Alan Arkin had a big presence during his years of gracing the silver screen and stage. Though he has starred in many films, Arkin also has a long and cherished history in several prominent Disney movies dating back decades. He played the well-ordered mechanic Peevy in The Rocketeer and Ray Poitevint in Million Dollar Arm. The actor also featured as Bud Newman, Mrs. Claus’s father, in The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause, as well as the endearing tour guide from 2011’s The Muppets movie.
Arkin also found fame via his role as Edward Scissorhands father in Tim Burton’s film starring Johnny Depp. He recently lent his voice talent to Netflix’s Bojack Horseman.
Outside of Disney, Arkin is probably most well known for his Oscar-winning performance in the cult film Little Miss Sunshine. The actor also received Academy Award nominations for his work in films such as Argo, The Russians are Coming, and The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. These are only a handful of the films Arkin has lent his talents to over the years. His last credited role was the voice of Wild Knuckles in Minions: The Rise of Gru.
Arkin was also a prominent stage performer during his eight-decade career. Beginning as a Second City comedy troupe member, he received a Tony award for his performance in the 1963 play Enter Laughing. He also directed four stage plays, including a nomination for best direction for his work on Sunshine Boys.
