What started as a reported procedural shift at Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park over a week ago has now been confirmed as a permanent change. The update affects how every Walt Disney World Resort guest, staying on-property or not, experiences the park before it officially opens each morning.
What Rope Drop Is
For the uninitiated, rope drop is the daily ritual of arriving at a Disney theme park early enough to be among the first guests through the gates when the park opens. The strategy allows guests to experience the most popular attractions with minimal wait times before the bulk of the day's crowd arrives — all without spending extra money on Lightning Lane passes.
Walt Disney World Resort manages the pre-opening crowd through specific procedures at each theme park, separating guests into two groups: those staying at Disney Resort hotels, who can enter 30 minutes before the official opening through the Early Theme Park Entry benefit, and off-property guests, who wait until the park officially opens.
What's Different at Animal Kingdom Theme Park Now
WDWNT reported on Thursday that Disney cast members had confirmed the new rope drop procedures at Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park are permanent, not a temporary adjustment.
Previously, off-property guests were held in the Oasis, the dense jungle-like area before the bridge to Discovery Island, until the park officially opened. Under the new system, those guests are now brought onto Discovery Island during the 30-minute early entry window, giving them more space to move around and the opportunity to take Disney PhotoPass photos in front of the Tree of Life. However, the Discovery Island shops don't open until 8:00 a.m.
Disney Resort hotel guests accessing early theme park entry now check in with cast members at three designated points: near Island Mercantile for guests heading to Pandora — The World of Avatar, in front of Zootopia: Better Zoogether! for the bridge to Asia near Expedition Everest, and at the former DinoLand U.S.A. bridge. Africa can be reached through either Asia or Pandora. Disney cast members scan one ticket, MagicBand, or smart device per group to verify that guests using early entry are staying on property.
No Official Announcement From Disney
Despite cast members confirming the change is permanent, Walt Disney World Resort has made no public statement about the updated procedures. Guests planning a visit to Disney's Animal Kingdom should be aware that rope drop protocols across all four Central Florida theme parks are subject to change — particularly as Pueblo Esperanza, the new area replacing DinoLand U.S.A., is expected to introduce three new attractions in 2027.
