Johnny Depp Returns as Captain Jack Sparrow in New Disney Offering

Captain Jack Sparrow has made an unexpected comeback. After years of uncertainty surrounding Johnny Depp’s future with Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, the actor’s swashbuckling likeness has officially returned for one theme park offering.

When Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl premiered in 2003, Johnny Depp’s eccentric portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow redefined the modern pirate archetype. The character became the beating heart of the franchise, carrying five blockbuster films and inspiring updates to the Pirates of the Caribbean rides at Disneyland Park, Magic Kingdom Park, Disneyland Paris, and Tokyo Disneyland.

But in recent years, Disney and Depp’s relationship grew complicated. Amid the actor’s 2020 libel case against The U.K. Sun and the 2022 defamation trial involving ex-wife Amber Heard, Disney reportedly decided to remove Depp from future installments of the series. The studio was apparently developing a separate Pirates film led by Margot Robbie, although that project later stalled. Even after Depp’s courtroom victory in 2022, no sign of his return emerged, and the actor’s likeness quietly disappeared from official merchandise across U.S. Disney parks.

Depp lost his 2020 libel trial against The U.K. Sun after the court determined that there was sufficient evidence to justify the tabloid’s characterization of him as a “wife beater.” Two years later, he won the defamation case against Heard over an Op-Ed she published in The Washington Post, which described herself as a “victim of domestic abuse.” Although Depp largely prevailed, the case polarized audiences and left Disney’s position on the actor uncertain.

Despite Disney’s silence, Disney Fanatic recently confirmed that Captain Jack Sparrow has once again appeared as part of an official Disney offering. During a visit to Tokyo Disneyland, one reporter found multiple Pirates of the Caribbean-themed T-shirts featuring Johnny Depp’s likeness on display inside the gift shop near the Adventureland attraction.

The shirts mark a rare acknowledgment of Depp’s association with the franchise, signaling that at least one Disney park continues to celebrate his portrayal of the character. This stands in stark contrast to the merchandise policies at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort, where Depp’s likeness has been largely absent from souvenirs and displays since the height of his legal controversies.

Tokyo Disney Resort operates under license from The Walt Disney Company but is owned and managed independently by The Oriental Land Company. That distinction enables the park to make creative and operational decisions independently of corporate directives from Disney’s U.S.-based divisions.

This autonomy explains why Tokyo Disneyland has chosen to retain certain classic attractions and imagery that have been removed elsewhere. For instance, it remains the only Disney park in the world that has not reimagined Splash Mountain into Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.

While this may not be the theatrical return fans have long hoped for, Depp’s unofficial comeback through Tokyo Disneyland’s merchandise shows that his Captain Jack Sparrow still holds a place within the Disney legacy—if not everywhere, at least somewhere on the seven seas.
