Tree Falls on Two Disneyland Guests, Injuries Reported

Nearly three months after a tree collapsed onto guests at Disneyland Park, the Southern California vacation destination is finally moving to address the spot where it happened.

On May 20, WDWNT reported that plywood barriers had been installed in the outdoor patio dining area attached to the Plaza Inn at Disneyland Park. The walls block a portion of the seating area, leaving the rest of the patio accessible. Fabric-covered metal barriers have also been placed around nearby flowerbeds.

The Plaza Inn itself remains open throughout construction, continuing to serve its full breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus. Character dining at breakfast is also still available.

Disney cast members told WDWNT that the barriers are connected to plans to replace a ficus tree that came down during high winds earlier this year — specifically during the Disneyland After Dark: Sweethearts Nite event on February 17.

When the ficus fell near the Plaza Inn that night, it landed directly on two Disney Park guests, who were treated onsite by paramedics for minor injuries. Neither required transport to a hospital, and the Disneyland Resort Fire Department and other emergency responders arrived to remove the tree from the park.

LeWanda Joseph of Las Vegas, one of the guests who was struck, described the moment on Facebook in the aftermath:

“My husband and I were the ones hit. The tree fell directly on top of us…We had just sat down to take photos at the table when the tree snapped and fell. We’re okay for now. The medical staff came through ASAP.”
