Marvel Studios dropped a new trailer for James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and I have a shaking suspicion that fans are going to have to watch Rocket Raccoon’s story come to an end before the credits roll.
The raccoon, voiced by Bradley Cooper, has been a favorite to many Marvel movie fans through his appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) through the last two Guardians movies as well as Infinity War, Endgame, and Thor: Love and Thunder. His character has always been known for having a dark backstory, and it appears that fans will learn more about it in this latest installment.
Here is the trailer:
There is a lot about this material that teases the fulfillment of Rocket’s total character arch. He has moved away from the jaded self-centered bounty hunter to a place where he has welcomed in new friends and family. Some of the clips show Rocket in the most vulnerable state many fans have ever seen him. We hear him tell Quill, “I’m done running,” and in a state of obvious pain, he says, “We’ll all fly away together one last time into the forever and beautiful sky.”
Director James Gunn has also spoken in the past that he empathizes with Rocket most out of all the Guardians. Now that he is departing Marvel for a new role at DC, one could make the argument that he will ensure his favorite character will do the same.

Death has also followed Rocket wherever he went. He had to endure Groot’s demise, and he was one of two left after the snap in Infinity War. Perhaps it will be his turn to make the ultimate sacrifice for his friends.
Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 3, arrives in theaters on May 5, 2023.
