Sam Champion has been a cherished figure at ABC, particularly known for his role as the weatherman on Good Morning America since 2004. Over the years, he has captivated audiences with his charismatic presentation style and uplifting demeanor. In 2016, Champion departed from ABC to explore opportunities with The Weather Channel, where he hosted his own program.
However, he returned to ABC in 2019 to fill in during colleague Ginger Zee’s maternity leave and eventually secured a permanent position once again.

Recently, Mr. Champion made headlines for revealing a significant health update regarding his skin cancer diagnosis.
On air, he disclosed that he had been treated for nodular basal cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer. The discovery came after he noticed an unusual mark on his face, which turned out to be more serious than he initially thought. Champion emphasized the larger and deeper nature of the cancer, advising audiences on the importance of early detection and vigilance regarding any changes in their skin.
“When I’m not bringing you the weather I love nothing more than being outside, but these days I wouldn’t think about going outside without sunscreen. It wasn’t always the case…”
“I hope that one day no one has to go through surgery to get rid of skin cancer, but, right now, we have to keep our eye on our skin, our hands on our skin, be very vigilant and notice any unusual spots, and if those spots start to change, immediately get care…”
“No matter how old you are — my first one was at 26 — no matter what your skin tone, your skin type, your skin color, they’re cutting skin cancer off of everybody. So, it’s everybody’s issue.”

Champion did not shy away from sharing details about his treatment journey. He underwent surgery at New York City’s Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where the carcinoma was excised.
Following this, he pursued additional treatments, including laser therapy to eliminate precancerous spots on his face. Providing insights into his personal routine, Champion expressed that he now regards sunscreen as a crucial part of his daily regimen, especially after a long career of working outdoors, often without adequate sun protection.

A Network in Turmoil
In addition to Sam Champion’s recent health struggles, the network is currently navigating significant internal challenges.
Following the controversial firing of hosts Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes due to their scandalous affair, ABC has faced criticism concerning its leadership under President Kim Godwin. Reports indicate that the fallout from Robach and Holmes’ situation has exacerbated existing tensions within ABC, creating turbulence reflected in recent program changes.

Robach and Holmes were not the only anchors who created a stir at the top news network. Just days before Kim Godwin stepped down as President of ABC News, Good Morning America meteorologist Rob Marciano was also fired. Fans were shocked to learn that the popular meteorologist had been in multiple fights with producers and co-anchors. He was even banned from the studio.
According to insiders, ABC News execs are worried about the direction the network is heading in. Executives reportedly believe that firing Robach and Holmes was a mistake. They were the two top picks to join the Good Morning America team after stars like Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos decided to retire.
It is always important to remain vigilant when it comes to your health. Be aware, and if anything seems off, be sure to reach out to your primary care doctor.
