Over the 100 years that it has been in business, Disney has created dozens of animated and live-action films. Some of them are some of the most classic films people have ever seen, like Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. Others, people remember for the amazing music, like The Lion King and Encanto. Then, there are Disney movies that aren’t the biggest moneymakers, but they hold a special place in a lot of hearts. One of those films is the 2001 film, The Princess Dairies, which starred Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews.
The Princess Diaries told the story of Mia Thermopolis, a high-school nobody who found out that she was the princess of the small country of Genovia. Mia must grow into herself, develop confidence, and learn how to be a future queen from her grandmother (played by Andrews), all while trying to finish high school. The movie was quickly loved by fans and three years later, a sequel was released. Both Hathaway and Andrews returned for the sequel. They were joined by heartthrob superstar, Chris Pine.
It has been almost 20 years since fans last saw Princess Mia, but we haven’t seen the last of her. In November 2022, Disney confirmed that a third film in the franchise was officially moving forward. Anne Hathaway sat down with Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live and confirmed that there was a script. She also confirmed that several people from the first two movies were interested in returning. Among those were Chris Pine — Mia’s love interest, Mandy Moore — Mia’s high school bully, and Heather Matarazzo — Mia’s best friend.
Hathaway also said that she and Julie Andrews would be interested in playing a part, but maybe not the lead roles. Unfortunately, Andrews seemed to contradict that, saying that “It would be too late to do it now.”
And now, another actress from the original film has said that she would love to return. Sandra Oh — who has starred in hit shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Killing Eve — played Mia’s high school principal, Ms. Gupta. Oh recently sat down for an interview with Entertainment Weekly and was asked about Gupta appearing in the third film. Oh was thrilled at the prospect, saying:
“I am ready for the Queen. Call me! I’m dying to see how Gupta has moved up in the world.”
Oh’s character did not have the largest role in the first film, but her scenes are memorable. Fans just love the scene where Principal Gupta first meets Queen Clarice (Andrews). Gupta tries her hardest to look elegant and make the queen like her. Then, she imitates the Queen in a hilarious, scene-stealing moment.
At this time, we have absolutely zero information on the third film. Hathaway said that it would not be made until things were absolutely perfect. That is a tall order, but hopefully, we will see more of Princess Mia and the people of Genovia!
