Sarah Michelle Gellar Cameo Revealed in New Legacy Sequel Trailer

Sarah Michelle Gellar’s impending return to the Buffyverse isn’t the only ’90s franchise to have starred the beloved actor that’s making a return. Sony Pictures has now unveiled the first look at I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025), a legacy sequel that ropes original castmates Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. back into coastal slasher carnage.

The trailer wastes no time in getting down to business: a late-night crash, shaken teens burying evidence before forming a secrecy pact, and 12 guilt-ridden months later—an ominous note that reads, “I know what you did last summer.” Then, we see the iconic hook-wielding killer as he stalks the film’s new characters. While Sarah Michelle Gellar’s pageant queen Helen Shivers is absent from the film, having been brutally dispatched in the 1997 original, we do see a picture of her during the trailer.

Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the upcoming sequel takes place in the present day but echoes the beats of the original 1997 film: secrecy, guilt, and a killer who values anniversary dates.

While Gellar is busy filming the new Buffy series where she’ll drop in as a recurring mentor for the next Slayer, Jennifer Love Hewitt’s Julie James and Freddie Prinze Jr.’s Ray Bronson will be guiding the all-new cast in I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025). Sony’s synopsis for the film confirms that the new teens “turn to two survivors of the legendary Southport Massacre of 1997 for help” once bodies start appearing.

Meanwhile, over on the Buffy revival, Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) is behind the camera, and Gellar, now 48, shifts from slayer to seasoned mentor—mirroring Hewitt and Prinze’s updated roles—as well as an executive producer.

I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025) hits theaters July 18. The Buffy revival is still building its stake-sharpening schedule.
