Shang-Chi actor Simu Liu is taking his character’s love of accessorizing with rings (ten of them, to be precise) and switching it to a love of accessorizing with Barbie dolls — maybe! The actor is in negotiations to join the A-list cast of an upcoming Barbie movie, according to Hollywood Reporter.
Although celebrity negotiations can go sideways right up until someone calls “action”, it would be intriguing if this LuckyChap Entertainment film panned out, and Simu Liu shared a glimpse of his Barbie doll self in honor of the announcement!
“Welp…I guess it’s salad for dinner” the Shang-Chi actor joked on Instagram, sharing Hollywood Reporter’s announcement about Barbie and adding a photo of his Barbie likeness. Check it out below!

Attempts to make a comical live-action adaptation of Barbie’s story (which typically includes the Barbie doll, a Ken doll (who is her love interest), and lots of pretty pink accessories like Barbie’s Malibu Dream Home) have stalled since one was first conceptualized in 1986. Mattel (the company that is famous for making Barbie dolls and that recently won a lawsuit about Disney dolls) has been trying to make a Barbie film adaptation with Sony Pictures for years now.
Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway were both in talks to play Barbie, but it is Australian actress Margot Robbie who will play the role while Ryan Gosling plays Ken. The production company LuckyChap Entertainment, which is run by Margot Robbie and Warner Bros, will produce the film. Oscar-nominated director Greta Gerwig will also be directing it, and America Ferrera will be playing another character in the movie!
With such a star-studded lineup in front of the camera and behind the camera, it sounds like this Barbie movie will be an entertaining one. We’re not sure who Simu Liu is playing yet, but it seems safe to say that he’s playing a ‘Barbie’ doll of sorts — and his martial arts skills might not come into play quite as much as they did in the Marvel movie Shang-Chi: Legend of the Ten Rings!
After starring in the award-nominated Marvel Studios blockbuster Shang-Chi: Legend of the Ten Rings, it seems like accountant-turned-actor Simu Liu has become very in demand. The young Kim’s Convenience actor has a new book and is set to star in Arthur the King opposite Uncharted actor Mark Wahlberg (not to mention he’s also starring in a movie opposite Philippa Soo from Hamilton and a thriller with Avatar actor Sam Worthington).
We can’t wait to see what Simu Liu will do next — whether or not he’s in his “Malibu Dream Car”!
