The new Disney Channel Original Movie, Prom Pact came out this week! It first debuted on Disney Channel and is now available to watch on Disney+. The film is the first Disney Channel Original Movie to come with a TV-14 rating. There are two versions of the film, one for the Disney Channel and one for Disney+. The Disney+ one we watched is definitely a far cry from the Disney Channel original movies we grew up on where Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens could not kiss in High School Musical.

Julie Bowen, Executive Producer, who you know and love as Claire from Modern Family shares: “It wasn’t a kids’ movie. The humor, the subject matter, all of it, even us talking about what was problematic in the ’80s, it definitely requires a maturity level. With a young child watching the Disney Channel after school hanging out, you don’t want them to have too many inappropriate questions. Our Disney Plus version, our original version, is definitely addressing some topics like sex or parties or things like that. We don’t hit it like a hammer, but it’s in there. Because we think that these are issues that kids are addressing and seeing all around them these days. And Disney+ wanted to do something that was a little bit more elevated for a teenage audience.”

So what makes this get the TV-14 rating, well a lot. There is cursing with usage of “dumbass”, “damn” “hell” and “crap”. There is a lengthy scene where two characters are talking about a character’s virginity repeatedly using the line, “putting a P in the V”. On the topic of virginity, the line “Who invited the party virgins?” is featured. They use the term “hooking up” while the Disney Channel version plays the tame “hanging out”. When talking about the plot point of 80s movie Revenge of the Nerds, the word “sex” is explicitly stated. A guidance counselor states “I didn’t mean ‘in his son’s pants.’ to the main character.

Lastly the biggest one is when main character walks in a room during said party above and finds a boy lying on a couch, it then is revealed another boy is underneath him in a gag. They both have shirts on but some parents naturally are VERY concerned as shocking this appeared in the Disney Channel version and Disney+ version. Some say it is an outwardly gay sex scene while others say the two young men are most likely just kissing.
