When some couples split up, they hope that they can keep things cordial and civil, especially if there are children involved. Unfortunately, things can go from friendly to hostile in a matter of minutes. Each parent wants to spend as much time as possible with their children, which can lead to serious fighting. And that appears to be what happened in the current battle brewing between Disney star Joe Jonas and his soon-to-be ex-wife, Game of Thrones star, Sophie Turner.

In early September, Jonas made headlines when he hired a divorce lawyer. Just 24 hours after that news broke, he filed for divorce from Turner after just four years of marriage.

The news shocked many fans, who thought that the two were a very solid couple. In the four years they were married, they had two children. After remaining silent for a few days, Jonas and Turner released a joint statement, saying that they were splitting “amicably.”

After four wonderful years of marriage we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage. There are many speculative narratives as to why but, truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children.

However, it appears that things may not be so amicable anymore.

According to multiple reports, Turner has filed a suit against her estranged husband Joe Jonas, asking a judge to force the singer to return with the children to England, where Turner resides. In her petition, Turner claimed that she and Jonas agreed that Jonas would return the children to England to spend time with her. He then reportedly changed his mind and refused to return the children or release their passports and possessions.

The filing does not directly say that Jonas has abducted his children, but Turner is citing the International Child Abduction Remedies Act. She also filed her suit through The Hague Abduction Convention. The Hague Abduction Convention is an international treaty that tries to find civil remedies for parents “seeking the return of a child wrongfully removed or retained across international borders.”

In response, a rep for Jonas released a statement, saying how disappointed his client was with the filing and that it was “misleading”:

“Joe and Sophie had a cordial meeting this past Sunday in New York, when Sophie came to New York to be with the kids. They have been with her since that meeting. Joe’s impression of the meeting was that they had reached an understanding that they would work together towards an amicable co-parenting setup.

Less than 24 hours later, Sophie advised that she wanted to take the children permanently to the UK. Thereafter, she demanded via this filing that Joe hand over the children’s passports so that she could take them out of the country immediately. If he complies, Joe will be in violation of the Florida Court order.

This is an unfortunate legal disagreement about a marriage that is sadly ending. When language like ‘abduction’ is used, it is misleading at best, and a serious abuse of the legal system at worst. The children were not abducted. After being in Joe’s care for the past three months at the agreement of both parties, the children are currently with their mother. Sophie is making this claim only to move the divorce proceedings to the UK and to remove the children from the U.S. permanently.”
