For an attraction supposedly approaching a major shutdown, Space Mountain isn't slowing down.
Magic Kingdom guests are packing the queue for the classic Tomorrowland coaster, sending its average wait beyond an hour. The sudden surge has placed Space Mountain ahead of nearly every other attraction in the park.
At the same time, the 51-year-old coaster faces growing questions about how much longer Disney can operate it in its current form.
Rumors continue pointing toward a possible major refurbishment in 2027. Disney hasn't confirmed those reports, but the attraction's age and the work already happening around Tomorrowland make its future particularly interesting.
And right now, guests appear determined to ride.
Wait Times Reach 67 Minutes
Space Mountain's latest numbers were enormous.
The attraction averaged a 67-minute wait after experiencing an increase of more than 50% from the previous week.
Only TRON Lightcycle / Run had a higher Magic Kingdom average at 74 minutes.
Even Seven Dwarfs Mine Train fell behind Space Mountain with its 53-minute average. Peter Pan's Flight averaged 45 minutes, while Tiana's Bayou Adventure reached 42 minutes.
For a coaster that debuted in 1975, that's quite an accomplishment.
Space Mountain isn't surviving solely because longtime Disney fans remember riding it as children. It's still attracting huge numbers of guests today.
That popularity could actually make Disney's next move more difficult.
Space Mountain Isn't Getting Any Younger
Few Magic Kingdom attractions have remained as recognizable as Space Mountain.
Its white exterior has become synonymous with Tomorrowland, while the coaster itself uses darkness to turn a relatively simple ride into something much more unpredictable.
But more than five decades of operation have also created challenges.
Space Mountain can feel rough compared to newer coasters. Its technology also reflects a completely different period in Disney's history.
That doesn't mean guests want Disney to tear everything out and start over.
Part of Space Mountain's appeal comes from the fact that it still feels like Space Mountain.
Disney would therefore have to walk a very narrow line with any substantial refurbishment.
Make too few changes, and the company could miss an opportunity to address the attraction's aging infrastructure. Change too much, and Disney risks removing the characteristics that have kept guests returning since 1975.
Reports Continue Pointing Toward 2027
The biggest question is what happens next.
Rumors have suggested Space Mountain could close in 2027 for a major project. Disney hasn't officially announced that closure or revealed what such a refurbishment might involve.
Still, Tomorrowland has already started changing.
Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin recently returned after receiving significant updates. Meanwhile, Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress has entered an extended refurbishment.
Space Mountain could become the next major Tomorrowland attraction to receive Disney's attention.
A substantial closure could potentially address aging ride components while giving Disney an opportunity to update other parts of the experience.
However, those details remain speculation until Disney announces its plans.
Closing Space Mountain Would Have Consequences
Disney also can't simply close Space Mountain without affecting the rest of Magic Kingdom.
Its current popularity demonstrates how many guests the attraction draws.
A 67-minute average placed Space Mountain just seven minutes behind TRON Lightcycle / Run. It also put the coaster 14 minutes ahead of Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.
If Space Mountain disappears from the lineup for months, those riders have to go somewhere.
Some would likely head toward TRON Lightcycle/ Run. Others could increase waits elsewhere around Magic Kingdom.
That's why any extended refurbishment would represent a significant operational decision rather than just another ride closure.
The Clock Could Be Ticking
Nothing currently confirms that guests need to rush to Magic Kingdom for one final Space Mountain ride.
Disney hasn't announced a 2027 closure.
But the combination of enormous wait times, an aging ride system, changes elsewhere in Tomorrowland, and continuing refurbishment reports makes Space Mountain one of the most interesting attractions to watch.
Its latest numbers also make one thing clear.
Space Mountain may be struggling with age, but it isn't struggling with popularity.
More than 50 years after its debut, guests are still waiting more than an hour to blast off.
If Disney does close Space Mountain in 2027, it won't be trying to rescue a forgotten attraction.
It will be trying to figure out how to prepare one of Magic Kingdom's most popular classics for whatever comes next.
