Taylor Swift’s presence notwithstanding, the Super Bowl this past Sunday was not, in fact, the most-watched non-news telecast of all time.

The Super Bowl LVIII that just happened this last weekend, wherein the Kansas City Chiefs played, and won, against the San Francisco 49ers, was one of the most watched sports broadcasts of all time. And understandably so. The Super Bowl is one of the most anticipated games of the year, and many Americans tune in to watch the final match.

Fans Contest that Super Bowl is the Most Watched Non-News Telecast of All Time

However, recently, some of the latest news reports asserted that the popular sporting event broke certain records, and some even went so far as to say the Super Bowl LVIII was “the most-watched non-news telecast of all time.”

A few facts of note: Sunday’s Super Bowl drew a record number of 123.4 million viewers across CBS and Paramount+.

However, one fan took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to debunk that assertion. Earlier this year, the ICC Cricket World Cup took place in India at the Narendra Modi Stadium, and the match was between India and Australia. This game was watched by 300 million viewers with a peak concurrency of 130 million.

This said, the Super Bowl certainly broke many commendable records. This Super Bowl is, in fact, the most-watched program on US television and in US TV history.

While some fans are frustrated by this next claim, some believe that this was in large part due to the influence of NFL star Travis Kelce’s whirlwind romance with pop star Taylor Swift.

According to the Times of India, “Her association with the NFL, particularly with the Chiefs and Travis Kelce, has reportedly generated over $300 million in free coverage.”
