The upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup, which Disney will be streaming, is set to bring in ₹2000 crore, equalling $300 million in revenue.

It’s no secret that the Walt Disney Company has been facing financial trouble. There’s a reason that a large part of 2023 has seen the Mouse House go through a series of reorganizations, including layoffs that affected 7000 positions at the company (4,000 people were fired, with an additional 3,000 open job listings canceled). Disney CEO Bob Iger has made a notable effort to cut $5.5 billion in costs.

However, it seems things might be on the up and up for Disney.

Disney Star in India Set to Earn ₹2000 Crore ($300 Million+) During ICC Cricket World Cup

The Walt Disney Company’s India subsidiary, Disney Star (wholly owned by Disney), is looking to bring in over $300 million in ad revenue during the ICC Cricket World Cup that is being hosted in India later this year.

Business Standard explained, “Disney Star is expected to earn a minimum of Rs 2,000 crore through advertising, with a 50-50 split between television and its OTT channel, Disney+ Hotstar, say media planners and advertising agencies dealing with the broadcaster for the upcoming ICC World Cup beginning on October 5.”

The news outlet explains, “Disney Star controls both the digital as well as the broadcasting rights for the big-ticket tournament.”

Sandeep Goyal, chairman of Rediffusion, a leading Indian advertising firm, explained, “Star should get about Rs 2000 crore from the tournament on the basis of a back-of-the-envelope calculation. It could even be a little more. But the hype around the tournament could bring in an equal amount to the media such as newspapers, news channels, outdoors, experimental, social, digital, and so on, on cricket-themed advertising. But this would be spread over hundreds of media outlets.”

This notable income comes at a good time for both Disney CEO Bob Iger and the Walt Disney Company. Many have criticized Mr. Iger for his decisions and actions since he returned as CEO last November. And some have even questioned what happened to the Bob Iger many fans grew to love before he was succeeded (albeit it temporarily) by former Disney CEO Bob Chapek.

Perhaps these upcoming sources of revenue are signs ofDisney’sg tides for both Mr. Iger and the Walt Disney Company.
