The past week has been filled with turbulence for both The Walt Disney Company and ABC. A single decision to suspend Jimmy Kimmel Live! sent ripple effects throughout the industry, igniting protests, sparking debate across social media, and leaving audiences questioning how far corporate and government influence can go in silencing voices on air.
For days, Disney faced challenges that stretched beyond simple criticism. Its Burbank lot saw protestors gather outside its gates. Disney+ experienced waves of cancellations so significant that the service was reported to have crashed, while the company’s stock price took a noticeable hit. Several Disney-affiliated stars went so far as to call on fans to boycott the company altogether.

At the heart of this uproar was Disney’s announcement that it would be suspending Jimmy Kimmel Live!. The decision followed NexStar Media and Sinclair Broadcasting’s refusal to air the program after Mr. Kimmel made pointed remarks about Charlie Kirk and Donald Trump.
With broadcasters pulling away, Disney removed the show, sparking widespread backlash.
Reports soon revealed that Kimmel’s legal team entered talks with Disney over how the show could return. Still, Sinclair Broadcasting made clear it would not broadcast unless Kimmel agreed to a set of conditions. Yet, Kimmel stood his ground.
He reportedly refused to issue an apology for his statements, maintaining that his words were being “mischaracterized.” He also made it clear that he would not “kowtow to the outrage.”

While the Kimmel controversy was playing out, another group at ABC stood out for its silence. For two episodes, the hosts of The View refrained from addressing the matter. That changed when Whoopi Goldberg spoke directly to the audience, saying, “No one silences us.”
Goldberg explained the delay, telling viewers:
Did y’all really think we weren’t going to talk about Jimmy Kimmel? I mean, have you watched the show over the last 29 seasons? No one silences us.
When the news broke last week about Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension, we took a breath to see if Jimmy was going to say anything about it first. You can not like a show and it can go off the air. Someone can say something they shouldn’t and get taken off the air. But the government cannot apply pressure to force someone to be silenced.

Co-hosts Anna Navarro and Alyssa Farah Griffin joined the conversation by calling attention to the Federal Communications Commission’s role in the situation. Navarro voiced strong criticism of the agency’s threats toward Disney:
I don’t understand how in this country, where the First Amendment was made to the Constitution to guarantee freedom of the press and freedom of speech, how the government itself is using its weight and power to bully and scare people into silence.
Goldberg reiterated that the women of The View have long defended free expression, no matter the backlash.
We talk about freedom of speech a lot because we are always in somebody’s mess because somebody has decided that we have said something that’s offensive. But we fight for everybody’s right to have freedom of speech because it means my speech is free, it means your speech is free.

Amid this pushback, FCC head Brendan Carr suggested he could investigate The View under the Equal Opportunity Rule. While the regulation is more commonly applied to “bona fide newscasts,” it can extend to talk shows under certain conditions. Despite the potential investigation, the hosts remained defiant.
Later that same afternoon, Disney reversed its course. On September 22, the company announced that Jimmy Kimmel Live! would return to its late-night slot beginning September 23. In its statement, Disney said the suspension had been due to comments it considered “ill-timed.” After having what it described as “thoughtful conversations with Jimmy,” the company lifted the suspension.
Do you think it was brave for the women of The View to speak out on Mr. Kimmel’s suspension, despite the threat of an investigation? Do you think a show should be suspended because its host says something some people do not like? Do you think Disney should have ever canceled Jimmy Kimmel Live!?
