Universal Just Shut Down Another ‘Shrek’ Attraction – Here’s What We Know

The legacy of Shrek continues to endure, but one of its beloved theme park attractions has been removed yet again. Universal Studios Japan has indefinitely closed Shrek 4-D, marking the latest in a series of removals across Universal parks worldwide.

Featuring an original story set between Shrek (2001) and Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek 4-D followed Shrek (Mike Meyers) and Donkey (Eddie Murphy) as they rescued Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) from the vengeful ghost of Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow).

Combining 3D animation with practical effects like moving seats, air blasts, and water sprays, Shrek 4-D immersed audiences in the adventure. However, those wanting to experience it for themselves will need to travel a significant distance for the chance to do so.

Once a staple at multiple locations, Shrek 4-D first disappeared from Universal Studios Hollywood, replaced by the DreamWorks Theatre. Universal Studios Florida followed suit, removing the attraction to make way for Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast.

While Florida’s DreamWorks Land features Shrek-themed elements – including a meet-and-greet with Shrek and Fiona in Shrek’s swamp – the original 4-D experience now exists only at Universal Studios Singapore—at least for now.

The closure of Shrek 4-D in Japan, which took effect on January 23, 2025, also affects Sesame Street 4-D Movie Magic, housed in the same building. The attraction had previously shut down in 2024 before reopening in November of the same year, but its current status suggests a more permanent departure.

For fans seeking Shrek experiences, Motiongate Dubai remains a stronghold with two dedicated rides—Shrek’s Merry Fairy Tale Journey and Swamp Celebration—inside its indoor DreamWorks land. Meanwhile, Shrek’s Adventure! London offers an interactive walkthrough featuring characters from multiple DreamWorks franchises.

With Shrek 5 set to release in December 2026, there’s every chance that Universal may introduce new Shrek attractions in the future. But for now, the days of Shrek 4-D are numbered, and fans must travel further to relive the ogre’s adventures.

Do you think Shrek 4-D should make a comeback?
