Universal’s Bold New Family Theme Park Takes Shape as Surprising Land Details Emerge

No More ‘Harry Potter’?

For decades, visiting a Universal theme park has meant stepping into larger-than-life worlds filled with blockbuster films, thrilling attractions, and beloved characters. Families traveling to destinations like Universal Orlando Resort often plan months—or even years—in advance, hoping to experience the magic that only the Universal brand can deliver.

But as theme park fans know, the entertainment landscape is always evolving. New lands, new resorts, and new ideas are constantly reshaping how guests experience their favorite franchises. In recent years, Universal Destinations & Experiences has expanded its footprint dramatically, pushing beyond its traditional markets with ambitious new projects designed to reach entirely new audiences.

Now, one upcoming destination promises to do something Universal has never attempted before: build an entire theme park designed specifically for younger children and their families.

A New Generation of Theme Park Experiences Is Beginning To Take Shape

Families with younger kids often approach theme park visits differently than thrill-seeking teenagers or adult superfans. Instead of massive roller coasters and intense attractions, younger guests thrive in environments filled with imagination, discovery, and hands-on play.

That idea appears to be the driving philosophy behind Universal’s newest project.

Announced as Universal Kids Resort, the upcoming destination aims to reimagine what a theme park designed specifically for children could look like. According to the creative team behind the project, the goal is to inspire “unbridled creativity” through play, storytelling, and immersive environments that allow kids to interact with their favorite characters in ways never seen before.

While excitement around the project has steadily grown since its initial announcement, many of the park’s details remained largely under wraps—until now.

Universal Begins Unveiling What Families Can Actually Expect Inside the Park

Newly released information has begun pulling back the curtain on what guests will experience when Universal Kids Resort opens in Frisco, Texas, in 2026.

The upcoming resort will feature seven themed lands, each inspired by major Universal, DreamWorks, Nickelodeon, and Illumination properties that younger audiences already adore.

Unlike traditional Universal parks known for large-scale thrill rides, this park will lean into kid-friendly attractions, interactive play areas, character encounters, and immersive storytelling environments designed specifically for younger visitors.

The experience begins at Isle of Curiosity, an entry area that acts as a playful hub where families can explore interactive environments and meet familiar characters before venturing deeper into the park.

From there, guests will discover an array of imaginative lands built around some of entertainment’s most recognizable animated franchises.

Dreamworks Characters and Animated Icons Will Headline Multiple Immersive Lands

Among the first themed areas revealed is DreamWorks’ Shrek’s Swamp, where guests can meet Shrek and Fiona while exploring a water-filled environment inspired by the beloved films. The area promises splash zones and playful experiences that bring the fairytale—or “ogretale”—world to life.

Another DreamWorks-inspired area, TrollsFest, invites guests into a colorful, music-filled celebration hosted by characters like Poppy and Branch. Designed as an energetic environment where kids can sing, dance, and interact with performers, the land embraces the joyful spirit of the Trolls franchise.

Families can also visit Puss in Boots Del Mar, a vibrant village setting where guests can participate in games, rides, and a festive meet-and-greet with the swashbuckling feline hero.

But DreamWorks isn’t the only studio bringing its characters to the park.

Familiar Nickelodeon and Illumination Worlds Will Expand the Park’s Lineup

Universal Kids Resort will also feature beloved characters from other major entertainment brands.

One of the most recognizable additions is Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants Bikini Bottom, where guests can explore the underwater town made famous in the long-running animated series. Visitors will have the chance to explore locations like SpongeBob’s iconic Pineapple House and interact with characters from the show.

Meanwhile, adventure-loving families can explore Jurassic World Adventure Camp, where young explorers can experience dinosaur-themed attractions, encounter baby dinosaurs, and explore jungle environments inspired by the blockbuster franchise.

Universal Confirms the Reveal Fans Have Been Waiting For

At the heart of these announcements is the biggest confirmation yet: Universal Kids Resort is officially moving forward as Universal’s first theme park built entirely for children and families with younger kids.

Scheduled to open in Frisco, Texas in 2026, the destination will include not only the seven themed lands but also a 300-room themed hotel designed to keep families immersed in the experience long after the park closes each night.

The resort is being developed as a first-of-its-kind concept for Universal, focusing on playful storytelling, accessible rides, interactive shows, character meet-and-greets, and sensory-friendly environments designed for children of all ages.

What This Means for Families Planning Future Theme Park Trips

With construction continuing and new details steadily emerging, Universal Kids Resort is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing theme park developments in recent years.

The project represents a new strategy for Universal Destinations & Experiences—one that expands the company’s reach while creating experiences tailored specifically for young explorers.

When the gates finally open in 2026, families will step into a destination where kids truly rule the day.

But the big question remains: Will Universal’s first kids-focused theme park redefine what family entertainment looks like in the United States?

Since first stepping inside the Magic Kingdom at nine years old, I knew I was destined to be a theme Park enthusiast. Although I consider myself a theme Park junkie, I still have much to learn and discover about Disney. Universal Orlando Resort has my heart; being an Annual Passholder means visiting my favorite places on Earth when possible! When I’m not writing about Disney, Universal, or entertainment news, you’ll find me cruising on my motorcycle, hiking throughout my local metro parks, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, family, or friends.
