Universal Removes Annual Passholder Perk After Guests Already Paid

Universal Orlando fans are sounding off online after the resort announced that Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure will no longer offer Universal Express beginning July 1, 2026.

For many guests, this is not just another operational adjustment. It is a direct hit to the value of some of Universal’s most expensive products, including the Premier Annual Pass, premium on-site hotels, and Express Pass add-ons that many families already purchased months ago.

And the biggest frustration? Guests say they already paid for these perks under the assumption that Hagrid’s would remain part of the Express lineup.

Hagrid’s Became the Biggest Selling Point

When Universal first added Hagrid’s to Express last year, it completely changed how many guests viewed the Premier Annual Pass.

At nearly $905 for the two-park option before tax, the Premier Pass has always targeted Universal’s most loyal fans. The biggest perk is Express access after 4 p.m. at Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure.

For years, Hagrid’s was excluded because of massive demand and capacity concerns. Once Universal finally added it, the value of Premier passes skyrocketed almost overnight.

Hagrid’s is consistently one of the busiest rides in all of Orlando. Wait times can stretch well past 90 minutes during holidays, weekends, and summer afternoons. Passholders suddenly had a way to experience one of Universal’s biggest attractions without sacrificing hours in line.

Now that benefit is disappearing.

Universal says the change is intended to improve “the overall flow of the guest experience,” but many fans feel like the company is taking away one of the main reasons they upgraded in the first place.

Hotel Guests Are Angry Too

This controversy goes far beyond Annual Passholders.

Guests staying at Hard Rock Hotel, Royal Pacific Resort, and Loews Portofino Bay Hotel also receive Universal Express as part of their stay. Those hotels are among the most expensive options at Universal Orlando, and many families justify the higher prices specifically because Express access can dramatically reduce wait times.

For some guests, Hagrid’s being included played a huge role in booking those resorts.

“I have booked my stay at Hard Rock Hotel so that we have the express pass, a key reason was knowing we could use it on Hagrids as we are coming from the UK for a once in a lifetime holiday and my kids are Harry Potter mad,” John Page wrote online after the announcement.

Others echoed similar frustration across social media.

“This is a joke, we’ve booked specific hotels and express passes exactly for this ride and you’re taking it away with a months notice?,” @SharpT posted.

Many guests are not upset that policies changed. They are upset by how quickly the change is happening after Universal spent the past year promoting Hagrid’s as part of the premium Express experience.

Some Fans Say They Will Downgrade or Leave

The reaction from Premier Passholders has been especially intense.

“I have three premier passes up for renewal in a week and this is making me seriously reconsider. This is our son’s favorite ride in all the parks and the main reason we buy premier,” Douglas said.

“wow what an awful move. this was the sole reason I spent the money on the premier annual pass. guess I’ll downgrade next renewal,” Molly added.

Others say Universal may have pushed them away entirely.

“Yeah as a premier annual pass holder who got it specifically for express after 4 to ride Hagrids without waiting I think it’s officially time to look at canceling my pass and switching to Disney,” Brandon wrote.

“We’ve been on the fence about renewing our APs with still having to pay almost full price for Epic and this sealed our decision not to renew,” J.R. added.

That last point is important.

Even a year after Epic Universe opened, many Universal fans still feel frustrated over how expensive the full Universal Orlando experience has become. Between separate ticket structures, rising hotel prices, and premium upgrades, some guests already believed the value equation was changing.

Removing Hagrid’s from Express only adds to that conversation.

Universal Likely Saw Operational Problems

To be fair, many guests understand why Universal may have made this decision.

Hagrid’s has struggled with capacity since opening in 2019. The ride uses complicated ride systems, launches, switch tracks, and detailed show elements that make operations more difficult than a standard coaster.

Even after years of adjustments, the attraction still develops extremely long waits on a regular basis.

Adding Express last year likely created another problem: standby waits often slowed dramatically whenever large waves of Express guests entered the queue.

Universal now appears to be prioritizing overall line movement over premium access.

Operationally, that makes sense.

The problem is perception.

Many fans feel Universal heavily benefited from advertising Hagrid’s as part of Premier Passes, Express add-ons, and hotel stays. Removing the perk with relatively short notice leaves some guests feeling like they paid premium prices for benefits that no longer exist.

And unlike a future ticket purchase, many of these vacations, renewals, and hotel stays were already booked long before the announcement arrived.
