Universal has implemented stricter policies following a wave of rowdy behavior involving umbrellas that disrupted the atmosphere at its parks.
With five resorts worldwide, Universal provides an array of immersive, movie-inspired thrills for all ages. Universal Orlando Resort may be the centerpiece, boasting two theme parks, a water park, and the highly anticipated Epic Universe set to open in May 2025. Still, some of the most memorable experiences await at Universal’s parks across the globe.
In Singapore, Shrek fans can explore an entire Far Far Away-themed land, complete with the iconic Battlestar Galactica: Human vs. Cylon roller coaster. Over in Beijing, Universal Studios features Transformers: Metrobase, home to a Decepticon Driller-themed coaster inspired by The Incredible Hulk Coaster. Japan’s park also offers other exclusive attractions, including the Flying Dinosaur, Space Fantasy—The Ride (the reopening of which was recently fixed for January), and Hollywood Dream—The Ride.
However, some attractions at these parks are near replicas of those found in Hollywood and Orlando, such as Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, Jurassic Park: The Ride, and the beloved WaterWorld stunt show.
Like the Hollywood original, the stunt show is based on the 1995 film of the same name and takes place shortly after the end of the movie, with Helen returning from “Dryland” to get her friends from the “Atoll.”
Big WaterWorld Changes at Universal Studios Japan
WaterWorld has become a hot topic recently, sparking conversations about its iconic splash zone, where guests—often wielding umbrellas—brace to get wet. However, this has reportedly led to disruptions among parkgoers.
As per USJ 1, a new addition to the Universal Studios Japan app now advises that umbrellas are banned in WaterWorld’s theater area due to a series of incidents involving visitors.

Rule Changes at Universal Studios Japan
This isn’t Universal’s first policy adjustment due to guest behavior. Earlier this year, the Osaka park considered stricter guidelines after children repeatedly entered restricted areas during the Kuromi Live show.
In contrast, Universal Studios Japan recently relaxed its rule against photography on the Jaws ride. Beginning May 28, 2024, guests will be allowed to snap photos and videos aboard the ride, responding to the high volume of visitors defying the original ban.
“Starting Tuesday, May 28, 2024, photography and videography will be permitted while riding Jaws,” reported USJ 1. “The influx of foreign visitors taking photos has made enforcement difficult, prompting Universal to review its operations.”
