New ‘Jaws’ Ride Update at Universal, 30 Lucky Guests Get First Ride

Universal has unveiled a major update to its iconic Jaws attraction, marking a significant shift towards sustainability.

Since its debut, the Jaws ride has been a fan favorite, taking guests on a thrilling boat ride through the fictional Amity Island, where a menacing (and terrifyingly realistic) animatronic great white shark lurks.

While Universal Studios Hollywood incorporates the experience into its Studio Tour and Universal Studios Florida axed its version in 2012 to make way for the Diagon Alley expansion of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, the attraction remains a cornerstone of Universal Studios Japan.

Updates for ‘Jaws’ Ride

That’s what makes the ride’s latest update so impactful.

As of November 22, 2024, Universal Studios Japan’s Jaws ride has officially transitioned to run on renewable energy. The update utilizes biodiesel made from waste cooking oil, such as potato frying oil, sourced from the park’s restaurants. This eco-friendly switch makes the Jaws ride the first attraction at Universal Studios Japan to operate on sustainable energy, contributing to the park’s larger environmental goals.

Universal Studios Japan’s commitment to sustainability is part of its broader Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts, embodied in the slogan “LOVE HAS NO LIMIT.” This initiative aims to reduce the park’s environmental impact while maximizing the use of limited resources. The shift to renewable energy for the Jaws ride is just one step in Universal’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainability across the park.

Despite the change in energy sources, the Jaws ride remains just as terrifying as before, with guests still experiencing the heart-pounding boat chase as the great white shark makes its infamous appearance. However, the updated ride is now slightly less “scary” for the environment, providing a thrilling adventure that also aligns with Universal’s growing eco-conscious goals.

Other Exciting Updates at Universal Studios Japan

The Jaws update is just one of several changes happening at Universal Studios Japan. The park is preparing to officially open Donkey Kong Country, a new land inspired by Nintendo’s popular video games. This land will feature a family-friendly coaster, Mine Cart Madness, offering a new adventure for park visitors. While the official opening date is set for December 11, 2024, guests can already experience the area during its soft opening, with strict rules in place to prevent leaks of photos and videos.

In addition, the park is currently celebrating the 2024 holiday season with festivities that include its famous giant Christmas tree. This year’s holiday celebration will be the last to feature its record-breaking iconic tree, making it a special occasion for fans and visitors.

For those who miss the Jaws ride at other Universal parks, Universal Studios Japan remains the only destination to experience the full, original version. With its recent updates and sustainable initiatives, the Jaws attraction continues to offer both an unforgettable experience and a step towards a greener future.
