Will Thor and Star-Lord Start Dating in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’?

When the new Thor: Love and Thunder trailer was finally released on April 18 after a long and frustrating wait for Marvel fans, most Marvel Studios aficionados were simply thrilled to finally catch some glimpses of Thor and his friends again. However, some fans have now decided that one particular scene in the short teaser trailer means two Marvel protagonists might become romantically involved — and it’s not Thor and Jane Foster or Peter Quill and Gamora!

In a scene between Guardians of the Galaxy protagonist Peter Quill (who is also known as Star-Lord, and who is played by Jurassic World and Parks and Recreation actor Chris Pratt) and Thor (who is played by Australian actor Chris Hemsworth), Thor and Peter have a potentially flirtatious moment.

Peter Quill is in the middle of telling his friends to look at “the people [they] love” in the scene, and Thor deliberately makes eye contact with Peter for a significant period of time before brushing it off in a comical way. This scene (and Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi’s penchant for including LGBTQ characters in his movies) has caused some fans to speculate about the potential for a romance between Pratt and Hemsworth’s characters.

Since the movie Thor: Love and Thunder looks like it’s going to be focusing heavily on Thor’s journey to wellness and self-actualization (and since love is quite literally in the title of the new Marvel movie), the idea of Thor dating someone new does seem plausible. Natalie Portman’s character Jane Foster, the god of thunder and lightning’s old flame, is definitely in the trailer as the new female Thor — but if she and Thor don’t reunite romantically, and love is still in the air, then perhaps Thor will indeed pursue something with the chief Guardian of the Galaxy!

Forbes referenced Taika Waititi’s former films in an article that examined the potential for a Peter Quill and Thor romance, but (according to Forbes) “there’s [also] precedent for this as well in the source material. Maybe not between Quill and Thor specifically, but in the comics, Peter Quill is bisexual, something we also saw come up briefly in the recent Guardians of the Galaxy video game…While both Star-Lord and Thor’s romantic interests in the MCU have been women to date, that doesn’t seem like it has to stay that way.”

Marvel came under fire last year for its attempt at inclusivity in the Disney+ show Loki. In the Marvel show, the character Loki did confirm that he was bisexual. However, as Forbes put it, “the blink-and-you-missed-it handling of the information angered some prominent members of the L.G.B.T.Q. community”.

According to the New York Times, this new Thor movie will indeed “showcase a major L.G.B.T.Q. character”, but many fans are expecting that the aforementioned character will be Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie character instead of Thor or Peter Quill. According to Forbes, “a cut scene from Thor: Ragnarok was supposed to confirm that [Tessa Thompson’s character] was bisexual”.

While we can’t know for certain which character is being referred to until the movie has actually premiered in theaters on July 8, there is plenty of time for Marvel fans to pore through the teaser trailer’s footage and consider the idea of a Thor and Peter Quill romance!
