Walt Disney World Resort is synonymous with its iconic theme parks, yet the magic extends far beyond the gates. For those looking to immerse themselves in Disney’s addictively magical atmosphere without stepping foot in the parks, there’s plenty to discover in Mickey’s domain.
Whether it’s unwinding at luxurious resorts or uncovering hidden gems, here are ten unforgettable ways to experience the Disney magic away from the crowds.
1. Test Your Skills at Miniature Golf
Disney offers two beautifully themed miniature golf courses. Fantasia Gardens and Fairways Miniature Golf takes inspiration from the animated classic Fantasia (1940) and features playful obstacles and challenges.
If you’re in the mood for something festive, head to Winter Summerland Miniature Golf near Blizzard Beach. This course offers two themed options—one for summer lovers and another with a holiday twist. Whether you’re competing for fun or aiming for a hole-in-one, these courses are a great way to spend an afternoon. Plus, since they are open both day and night, you can enjoy the experience under the Florida sun or beneath the stars.
Miniature golf is also a fantastic option for families with kids. The courses are designed to be engaging for all ages, featuring whimsical details and interactive elements. Even if you’re not a golf pro, the experience remains fun, making it a great break from the fast-paced excitement of the parks while still immersing yourself in Disney magic.
2. Try Disney World Resort Activities
You don’t have to be a hotel guest to enjoy the incredible activities at Disney World resorts. At Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, for example, you can sip tea in an elegant, Victorian-inspired setting. Over at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground, thrill-seekers can explore the resort on a Segway X2 as part of the Wilderness Back Trail Adventure.
For a more laid-back experience, the same resort offers Chip ‘n’ Dale’s Campfire Sing-A-Long. Many resorts also offer other activities, including guided tours and outdoor movie nights known as Movies Under The Stars.
You can also visit Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge to watch zebras, giraffes, and other animals roam the savanna from the viewing areas, while Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort offers paid crafts activities.
3. Explore Disney Springs
If you love shopping, dining, and entertainment, Disney Springs is the perfect destination. Stroll through unique stores, enjoy live performances, or grab a bite at top-rated restaurants like The Boathouse or Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’.
You can also satisfy your sweet tooth at The Ganachery or Gideon’s Bakehouse. If you’re up for an activity, try bowling at Splitsville Luxury Lanes or enjoy some live music at House of Blues. For something unique, take a ride on Aerophile, a tethered hot air balloon offering stunning views of the entire Walt Disney World Resort.
And, of course, there’s plenty of shopping to be had at Disney Springs. While World of Disney may offer the most extensive range of merchandise, it can also get pretty chaotic, so don’t overlook the other stores on offer throughout the shopping and dining district.
4. Take a Disney World Monorail Tour
The Disney Monorail is more than just a mode of transportation; it’s an attraction in its own right. Take a scenic ride around Seven Seas Lagoon, stopping at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, and Disney’s Contemporary Resort, all while enjoying unparalleled views of the Disney resort skyline.
Each stop offers the perfect opportunity to explore the resorts, indulge in a meal, or relax with a drink at one of the themed lounges. The best part? The monorail is entirely free (and it’s not often you can say that at Disney). Time your visit just right, and you might even catch a glimpse of the Happily Ever After fireworks from a resort balcony or beach area.
Admittedly, you may encounter the odd queue waiting for the monorail. However, if you do decide to set out on a monorail tour, try to avoid peak rush hour – by which we mean the hours around opening and closing for Magic Kingdom Park – to get aboard with little to no wait.
5. Hit the Running Trails
Looking for a fun way to stay active? Disney has several scenic jogging trails at its resorts. You can run along the waterfront at Disney’s BoardWalk Inn or take a peaceful path through Disney’s Port Orleans Resort.
Disney provides maps of these trails, so you can plan a route that suits your pace. Whether you’re going for a quick jog or a long run, it’s a great way to see more of Disney property while getting some exercise (if the 20,000 steps tracked in the park each day aren’t quite enough for you). Early morning runs also provide a serene escape before the crowds arrive.
6. Walk Along Disney’s BoardWalk
Step into an Atlantic City-inspired setting at Disney’s BoardWalk. This charming waterfront area is packed with dining, nightlife, and entertainment.
Personally, we prefer to think of this as the cooler, more chill Disney Springs. Rent a Surrey bike for a ride around Crescent Lake, enjoy a scoop of ice cream at BoardWalk Ice Cream, or watch talented street performers in the evening.
If you’re feeling bougie, you may also want to try out The Cake Bake Shop Restaurant by Gwendolyn Rogers. One of the newest additions to Disney’s BoardWalk, the eatery is pricey but indulgent.
7. Take a Disney World Boat Ride
Disney offers free boat transportation that lets you enjoy the scenic beauty of the area. You can sail across Seven Seas Lagoon and Bay Lake, take a leisurely trip down the Sassagoula River, or hop aboard a FriendShip Boat between Disney’s BoardWalk, Disney’s Beach Club Resort, Disney’s Yacht Club Resort, EPCOT, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Try timing your ride around sunset for the most magical views, or catch a glimpse of Magic Kingdom’s Happily Ever After fireworks from the water. You can also book a private fireworks cruise for an extra special nighttime experience.
On your next visit to Walt Disney World, take some time to explore beyond the parks and discover new experiences. Disney’s magic goes beyond its famous attractions—you just need to take the time to discover the details.
