Walt Disney Imagineers are adding the finishing touches on TRON: Lightcycle/Run at Magic Kingdom Park, but something about the latest news is making me think that Tomorrowland’s newest coaster would have been better off as a dueling roller coaster experience.
We reported on Friday, March 3, that a new color lightcycle was being added to the experience. Soon there will be Blue, Green, and Red. This is in keeping with the canon of the original game and 1980s cult classic movie. Yes, Team Green appears to simply be a marketing stunt for the ride’s sponsor, Enterprise Rental Cars, that is going to be cool to provide some variety in the ride experience. But from where I’m sitting, I can’t help but think this would work so much better if we had dueling roller coaster tracks to make it feel even more like the light cycles were racing on The Grid.

Of course, the ride is still going to be epic, and it has other more pressing problems that are gaining fans’ attention. I also do not want to wait another five years for this attraction to truly be done. But I can’t help but imagine how cool it would be to mount the blue bike and face off against a real-life red bike, and perhaps there is a chance for some plusing in the near future. Dueling coasters have already claimed the title of fan favorite at other Florida Theme Parks such as Universal’s Islands of Adventure and Busch Gardens Tampa.

I will finally get my chance to ride TRON: Lightcycle/Run next weekend and I am prepared to write a full report on the experience.
Copied from the original TRON: Lightcycle Power Run at Shanghai Disney Resort, TRON: Lightcycle/Run takes its place in Disney World’s Tomorrowland alongside Space Mountain and the Tomorrowland Speedway. It is the first new attraction to hit Magic Kingdom since the unveiling of Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and everything else in New Fantasyland. It opens to the public via virtual queue and Individual Lightning Lane access on April 4, 2023.
