At ABC's On The Red Carpet Storytellers Spotlight, head of Walt Disney World Resort Imagineering, Zach Ridley, shared more details about a Monsters, Inc. (2001) coaster coming to Disney's Hollywood Studios.
Role of Disney Imagineering in Development
For the Monsters, Inc. Coaster, Walt Disney Imagineering dedicated decades to conceptualizing a ride that captures the essence of the beloved Pixar film.

“Imagineering takes its time, right,” Ridley said. “For us, this has been over two decades in the making, and now we're finally able to bring that door vault concept to reality in a way that really connects with fans.”

The team's approach emphasizes not only thrilling coaster mechanics but also immersive storytelling, allowing theme park guests to step directly into the world of Monstropolis.
Creative Inspirations and Storytelling Approach
Honoring the source material was paramount to Walt Disney Imagineers. The journey of developing the Monsters, Inc. coaster began with a deep dive into the film's unique narrative and visual aesthetics. Inspired by the iconic “scarers” and their famous doors, the Imagineers sought to create an attraction that would transport Walt Disney World Resort guests into the heart of the Monsters, Inc. universe.

“In a ride, it's more of an experience than a story,” Ridley explained. “You might have four or five minutes to be able to translate that. It's about distilling and keeping the essence.”
Inspiration from Iconic Doors in the Film
The doors that connect the monster realm to the human world serve as a central motif in Monsters, Inc. The Imagineers envisioned a coaster that embraced this concept, featuring suspended elements reminiscent of the doors seen in the movie. Each ride vehicle acts as a door itself, symbolically transporting riders from their reality into that of the monsters.
Translating Cinematic Moments into Ride Elements

Translating beloved cinematic moments into an interactive experience requires innovative thinking and creativity. The Imagineering team surveyed the film for key scenes that could enhance the ride experience. Using cutting-edge technology enables Walt Disney World Resort guests to feel like they are stepping directly into the action, intensifying their engagement with the ride.
Impact on Disney's Hollywood Studios
Potential Attractions to be Replaced

With the announcement of the Monsters, Inc. coaster at D23 Expo 2024, attention naturally turned to existing attractions within Disney's Hollywood Studios. Rumors and speculation abound regarding which rides or experiences may be sacrificed in favor of this new addition, especially after two pieces of concept art showed differing locations throughout the Central Florida Disney park.
Fan Reactions
While excitement for new attractions is ever palpable, nostalgia for existing favorites looms large. In August, fans on social media professed their love for Muppet*Vision 3D as rumors swirled that Walt Disney Imagineers hadn't decided whether to put the Monsters, Inc. ride in Muppets Courtyard or Animation Courtyard (featuring Disney Junior). @teddybearosito wrote:

From @JLHomni:
Warning: Don't let the recent renovations to the MuppetVision theater fool you. The Universe of Energy got brand new carpeting and a sophisticated LED light system for the Primeval Diorama installed WEEKS before they announced its closure.

The Monsters, Inc. ride is unlikely to replace Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, Toy Story Land, Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway, or other recent additions to the Disney park. Lightning McQueen's Racing Academy, located on Sunset Boulevard, is already slated for replacement by a Disney Villains show.

Walt Disney Imagineering has yet to announce the exact location of Monstropolis within Disney's Hollywood Studios or give an opening date for the Monsters, Inc. roller coaster.
