Magic Kingdom Guests Walk Around Inside Empty Carousel of Progress Attraction

One day after Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress welcomed its final rotating audience at Magic Kingdom Park, footage emerged showing that a group of dedicated fans had been moving freely around the Tomorrowland attraction's stage for years.

On Monday, the YouTube channel Carousel Club published a video titled “Carousel of Progress Walk Around Footage #1 (TJ POV)” — a 20-plus-minute documentation of the entire show, filmed from the edge of the stage using extending tripods and external camera equipment attached to extending clips. The footage was shot by a club member named TJ, with the “#1” in the title suggesting that additional videos from other members may surface in the future.

The Carousel Club's caption filled in the details of how the footage was captured:

“This is just one of MANY of these that we did over the years!! Joey would take up center stage filming John and I would run back and forth between the turntables. We both had our phones attached to extension clips which for me made it possible to reach between the scrims and curtains and get an un-obstructed view of the sets. All this while being careful not to accidentally trip the infrared intrusion sensors lining the front of the stage. There were however several instances throughout doing these where my shirt did brush across the lip of the stage as I was leaning over causing this to happen.”

The group filmed on March 9, 2022, choosing early morning and late evening windows when Magic Kingdom Park crowds were concentrated at rope drop or the fireworks viewing area near Cinderella Castle. According to the Carousel Club, Disney cast members gave permission to move around the theater during stationary scenes, and Walt Disney World Resort took no action against the group afterward.

The Risk That Can't Be Overlooked

The footage is a fascinating document of a now-closed attraction — but the way it was obtained carries real danger that the novelty of the video shouldn't obscure. Moving through unauthorized areas of an operating Carousel of Progress can be extremely dangerous.

In 1974, an 18-year-old Disneyland Resort cast member was killed after falling into the gap between a stationary wall and a moving stage on America Sings — an attraction that runs on the identical mechanical system as the Carousel of Progress. That same gap exists in the Magic Kingdom version of the ride. The infrared intrusion sensors that the Carousel Club mentioned navigating carefully were designed precisely to prevent people from finding out what happens when someone makes contact with the moving stage.

What the Footage Preserves

Setting aside how it was obtained, the video captures Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress in an earlier form — before Walt Disney World Resort updated the futuristic finale scene with more contemporary hairstyles and clothing for the Progress family. In that sense, it serves as an accidental preservation document for an attraction that performed its final show on July 5, 2026.

The Carousel of Progress is now closed for the first major reimagining of its scenes since 1994. The updated version will introduce the Progress family across four new eras — 1969, 1985, 1999, and “The Possible Future” — with a new audio-animatronic of Walt Disney providing the introduction. Walt Disney World Resort has not announced a reopening date.
