Disney World Guests Are Losing Popular Resort Privileges Under New 2026 Hotel Rules

When most people think about changes at Walt Disney World, they usually picture new rides, entertainment, or construction inside the parks. This year, though, many of Disney's biggest updates are happening at the resorts themselves.

Several new policies and operational changes have already taken effect, and they could influence everything from how you travel around property to what you'll experience during the holidays.

Perhaps the most noticeable change involves transportation from Disney Springs. Resort hopping has long been one of the most popular free activities at Walt Disney World. Guests often parked at Disney Springs before visiting resorts to shop, eat, or simply enjoy the atmosphere.

That strategy is now much more difficult.

Disney now limits buses and boats leaving Disney Springs to guests staying at Disney Resort hotels or visitors with qualifying reservations. Dining reservations generally must fall within a limited arrival window, and guests may need to show confirmation before boarding transportation.

The new policy is intended to reduce congestion and discourage guests from using Disney Springs as free parking for resort visits. While understandable from an operations standpoint, it changes how many experienced Disney fans have planned vacations for years.

Holiday visitors will also notice a significant difference.

Disney has officially confirmed that the famous gingerbread house inside Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa has been permanently discontinued. For decades, the towering display served as one of Walt Disney World's signature Christmas traditions. Families often made special trips to the resort just to admire the display and purchase seasonal treats.

Smaller holiday decorations will still be available around the resort, but many fans view the loss of the iconic gingerbread house as the end of an era.

Another update is designed to make booking Disney Resort hotels less confusing. Several Moderate Resorts now feature simplified room categories instead of lengthy lists of similar options.

Guests staying at Caribbean Beach, Coronado Springs, Port Orleans French Quarter, and Port Orleans Riverside will generally choose between Standard Rooms, Preferred Rooms, or King Bedrooms. Specialty accommodations remain available where applicable, but the overall booking process has become far more straightforward.

Disney has also continued improving its resort hotels through refurbishment projects. Newly refreshed guest rooms and ongoing renovations across multiple hotels are helping keep Disney's resort portfolio competitive while improving the overall guest experience.

Although none of these changes dramatically alter what makes a Disney vacation special, they do show the company continuing to refine how its hotels operate.

For guests visiting later this year, understanding these updates ahead of time can make vacation planning much smoother. Knowing the new transportation rules, understanding the revised booking options, and setting realistic expectations for holiday offerings can help eliminate surprises after arrival.

Disney World continues to evolve, and in 2026, many of those changes begin long before guests ever walk through the gates of a theme park.
