Sometimes it’s nice to see people being immature, especially when no one gets hurt. Since Florida Governor Ron DeSantis entered the contest for the Republican nomination for President, former President Donald Trump has spent much of his time dunking on DeSantis. Trump has seemed to settle on “Meatball Ron” as his new nickname for Governor DeSantis.
But this week, a proxy war between a DeSantis staffer and a Pro-Trump journalist threw around some significant accusations. And now, this war of words between the two frontrunners for the Republican presidential nomination has spilled over into a battle between their supporters on Twitter.
“Journalist” Laura Loomer responded to a message from a Governor DeSantis staffer, Christina Pushaw, with the question: “what about these Disney donations to @RonDeSantis?” The tweet also included a screenshot from an article saying that the Walt Disney Company, through Disney Worldwide Services Inc, made four separate donations to Friends of Ron DeSantis, a PAC helping the governor get reelected. The total of those four donations was $106,809.38.
But Loomer didn’t let it die there. She sent another tweet saying:
You want to dunk on Trump @ChristinaPushaw, but what about your boss taking huge donations from companies he claims are woke?
So, is Loomer correct? Technically speaking, yes. Disney did make those donations to Friends of Ron DeSantis, but that was between May 2019 and March 2021, before the current feud between the Walt Disney Company and the Florida Governor. The information that Loomer was tweeting came from a Newsweek article in April 2022. And the money Disney gave to DeSantis was insignificant compared to the $164 million his PAC raised.
But that doesn’t necessarily tell the entire story. The relationship between Disney and DeSantis has soured since the Mouse House criticized Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill. DeSantis and the Florida Legislature then stripped Walt Disney World of its self-governing powers and installed the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District.
Now the two sides are suing each other in federal court. In the meantime, the fate of Disney World and the Reedy Creek Improvement District remain in limbo.
Florida Gov Ron DeSantis announced last month that he would seek the Republican nomination for President in a glitchy announcement on Twitter Spaces. Donald Trump has a 20-30 percent lead over DeSantis for the nomination.
But no matter what happens with the election, the war of words between the two sides will continue.
We will continue to update this story at Disney Fanatic.
