Rocker Alice Cooper is known for many things, but being a peacemaker isn’t necessarily one of them. But he may soon be adding that title to his long list of accomplishments, which include the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Cooper has spent his summer touring with his good friend, Johnny Depp, and their band, Hollywood Vampires, including Aerosmith’s Joe Perry. For the Pirates of the Caribbean (2003) star, the tour has been a return to public life after the vicious defamation trial between Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard.
But for his part, Cooper said that he did not watch the Depp/Heard trial, but he knew Johnny would win. Cooper said the sign that told him Depp had this was when his ex-girlfriends testified on his behalf. Cooped added, “How many people have their exes literally on their side?”
Cooper also said that Depp never brought up the subject. He was just the Hollywood Vampire’s guitarist. But despite not watching or discussing the trial with Depp, Cooper has devised an idea to put this controversy behind them and get Depp back in front of the camera.
Cooper told Deadline:
The best thing I said about the whole thing was, ‘They should do a remake of War of the Roses with Johnny and Amber.’ Who’s not gonna go see that? I’m going to see that! To make it even better, make their lawyers Angie [Jolie] and Brad [Pitt]. All you need is a really funny director, and that’s gonna be a monster hit.
The War of the Roses (1981) stars Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, and Danny DeVito, who also directed the film. The story is about a couple getting divorced but still living in the same house. The two torment each other until they finally die in a chandelier accident (spoiler). Just as they are about to die, Douglas’ character reaches over and puts his hand on Turner’s shoulder after admitting that he always loved her. With her dying breath, she pushed his hand away, showing that even in death, her hatred lives.
This film could be used to respond to the entire saga between Depp and Heard and finally put it to rest for good. And Danny DeVito is still around to direct the movie. It would be a clever way to show that they’ve both moved on, assuming they don’t kill each other while filming.
Since the trial, Depp has worked on music with Alice Cooper and Joe Perry. The supergroup has been on tour for the last few months, mostly hitting the stage in Europe.
Depp’s last film was Jeanne du Barry (2023), where he played King Louis XV. The movie received a seven-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival.
Rumors have swirled about Depp possibly returning to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, but nothing has been confirmed thus far. Fans must wait for the Hollywood Vampires to return to the road to catch Depp.
