James Cameron Leaks Additional Sequels Coming for Popular Franchise

Influential Director and Producer James Cameron has seemingly confirmed the existence of two new sequels for a popular franchise he spearheaded. The funny thing is the authentication of these sequels has yet to be announced by Disney’s 20th Century Studios. Cameron accidentally leaked the news via an interview discussing selling his California ranch. Hidden in the responses is a direct confirmation that the 2019 hit Alita: Battle Angel has multiple sequels in the works. These Alita: Battle Angel sequels have a lot of fans instantly excited as they have been begging for more since the original film’s success in theaters.

James Cameron and Alita: Battle Angel

Alita: Battle Angel was the last film released under 20th Century Fox at the beginning of 2019, just before Disney purchased the studio. Based on the Yukito Kishoro manga Gunnm (Battle Angel Alita in English), the film was a sleeper success. It grossed $405 million at the box office with a budget of less than $200 million.

James Cameron had wanted to bring the title to theaters for a long time but gave director duties to Robert Rodriguez due to his commitments to the Avatar franchise sequels. Instead, Cameron produced the movie with Jon Landau and helped write the screenplay as well. It stars Rosa Salazar as the titular character, a cyborg with a human brain in a dystopian future who becomes a Hunter-Warrior. The film also features several other roles played by Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, and Keean Johnson.

Alita: Battle Angel Sequels

During an interview with Forbes, James Cameron accidentally let slip that multiple Alita: Battle Angel film sequels are currently in development. When explaining why he is selling his $33 million dollar coastal ranch in California, the respected director said the following:

And on Avatar, I’m working in Wellington and Los Angeles. And on the new Alita: Battle Angel films, I’ll be working in Austin, so it just didn’t make sense for us anymore.

Fans have been clamoring for news on the future of the franchise ever since Disney acquired 20th Century Studios. While the original film turned a decent profit at the box office, The Walt Disney Company has not mentioned any interest in creating sequels. It will be interesting to see if they confirm Cameron’s accidental leak or if he must backpedal on the news.

Disney isn’t exactly having a great time at the box office this year. Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3 has been their only big success, and none of their films have broke $1 billion for the first time in quite a while. The company has to really reaccess what fans want if they wish to change it around.
