The Avatar sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, was released in December of last year and became one of the most successful movies both in 2022 and of all time: it pulled in $2.282 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of the year, the highest-grossing film of the COVID-19 pandemic era, and the third highest-grossing film of all time. Despite a mixed reaction during opening weekend, the film did immensely well and made the Walt Disney Company a lot of money. In the latest news from the world of Avatar, Walt Disney World’s Pandora will inspire a lot more than you think in the upcoming Avatar 3.

With the franchise’s immense success, it’s unsurprising that director James Cameron is looking to the future; he recently shared some insight into what fans can expect for Avatar 3, and his sneak peek is going to make many Disney Parks fans very happy. Cameron revealed that Avatar 3 characters will draw inspiration from Walt Disney World’s land, Pandora, in Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park. As Disney Fanatics know, Pandora: The World of Avatar is to be set 100 years after the events of the first  Avatar movie.

In an interview for Deadline, director James Cameron had a conversation with production designers Dylan Cole and Ben Procter, and the trio chatted about honing “design ethos.” Cameron shared that the characters will be “desert people…the windtraders that trade, that travel around, that sort of thing.”

While Disney has often let its Theme Park attractions draw inspiration from the cinematic source, and entire movies have been based on successful attractions (we’re looking at you, Haunted Mansion) per Screenrant, this is the first time Disney has, in fact, pulled elements from an attraction into an upcoming movie.

After opening in 2017, the world of Pandora has taken Disney Park Guests by storm. Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger even mentioned how the land’s opening pushed up Disney’s Animal Kingdom attendance rates. It’s been so immensely successful that a new Avatar experience is also coming to the Disney Parks. With all this in the works, we’re certain Disney Fanatics are on the edges of their seats to know more about Avatar 3, due to release in December of 2024.
