At the end of 2022, two ABC News anchors became front-page news when it became public that they were having an affair. Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes were the hosts of GMA3: What You Need to Know. The couple confirmed their relationship, but said that they had both separated from their spouses before they started dating.
At first, ABC News President Kim Goodwin said that Holmes and Robach were being suspended pending an investigation. Goodwin said that ABC needed to see whether the two had violated any internal policies. The two remained quiet as the investigation took place, but there were multiple reports that their fellow Good Morning America anchors demanded they be fired.

In January 2023, Robach and Holmes were fired from their positions at ABC News. They remained incredibly quiet on social media, but were seen out and about in New York City. Then, after nearly ten months, the two seemed to confirm that they were still going strong when they posted the same photo on Instagram, saying that they were preparing to run the New York City Marathon.
Now, nearly a year after they lost their prominent jobs, Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes are back in a big way. On December 5, the two released the first episode of their new podcast, Amy & T.J. Just before the premiere of their podcast, they promised to “serve the tea”, and we are just getting a sip of that tea.
As expected, the two discussed their dramatic exit from the leading news network.
“I guess the best way to sum us up, Amy and T.J., is that we’re the folks who lost the jobs we love because we love each other. And that is the bottom line.”
Holmes also revealed that a number of news networks knew about their relationship, but did not report on it because there was nothing to say. It was not until a tabloid broke the story that ABC jumped into action.
“We each got a phone call from our bosses saying that they had made the decision — and they made it again a point to say we hadn’t violated any company policy — but because we had become a distraction that they thought it would be best if they temporarily took us off the air to let things quiet down. And I remember I said … Now this is going to be a story if you take us off the air, please don’t do this.”
“That was the morning we knew we would not be going back to that network. We knew that phone call sealed it, because you can’t come back from that.”
Darkness After the Scandal
While Holmes and Robach are in a good place and happy now, the time right after the scandal broke was a particularly dark time for the two — especially for Holmes. He revealed that he had not told his mother that he and his wife — Marilee Fiebig — were divorcing before his new relationship made headlines. He also said that both he and Robach were threatened.
Things got so bad that Robach feared Holmes would hurt himself. Holmes was sending her text messages that were in the past tense, including, “I’m sorry you were the love of my life.” Then, he wouldn’t respond to Robach’s text messages or messages sent from the production crew.
Robach got so scared that she asked her dad to take her to Holmes’ apartment to make sure he was okay.
“I remember going down the hall, opening the door, and my dad came in with me. And I saw you and you were just splayed out on your bed. I ran to you. I said, ‘T.J.!’ and you didn’t move. And I remember, it was the most awful thing, having to touch your body to see if you were warm. I was so afraid. You were just incoherent.”
Holmes revealed that after he left the ABC News studio after being suspended, he went home and began “pounding” vodka and eating an unknown number of “weed edibles.”
Robach admitted that the time right after their affair became public was one of the darkest times of her life. Robach is a breast cancer survivor, but said that this time in her life was harder. She admitted that there were times she wanted to die.
Thankfully, the two managed to get past the harsh headlines and remain committed to their relationship. They said that they are happier than they have ever been and called the last year a “reset.”
